The Characters Phil Lord And Chris Miller Want To Use After Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

The door to the Spider-Verse has been kicked open. And joining us on the big screen are such varied interpretations of Spider-Man as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir! But now that we know that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will receive a sequel, we asked co-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller which characters they'd love to see in the follow up, and they replied:

You probably had no idea that there WERE that many different Spider people in the universe. Well, that's because one needs to go outside of the traditional Spider-Man story to find all of these different characters.

The conceit behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is that there are a multitude of parallel universes happening at any given time. And in each of those universes, the Spider-Man myth played out differently. Meaning, it wasn't always Peter Parker that was bitten by a radioactive spider. Once, it was Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales. Once, it was Gwen Stacy. And so on.

The animated adventure, which reinvented how Spider-Man stories can be told, thrived at the multiplex over the weekend, winning the box office with a robust $35.4 million in tickets sold. It showed that audiences were open to accepting offbeat and unexpected versions of Spider-Man (because anyone can wear the mask), which means that Phil Lord and Chris Miller -- and the three directors credited with tackling Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse -- can really get creative with the direction of a sequel. Especially as, in a Vanity Fair article, uber producer Amy Pascal has stated that Spider-Gwen will be joined, in upcoming movies, by Cindy Moon (Silk) and Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman).

That doesn't mean they are trying to isolate the casual filmgoer by being too weird. Chris Miller was quick to explain to CinemaBlend:

What's cool about the movie is that if you are into that sort of stuff, the deep comic-book canon, it's awesome. But even if you have no understanding of what comic books are, and you've never opened a page of one, these movies are still for you, too.

Audiences sure did respond to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And critics helped push the movie ahead of 95% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie may struggle to keep pace, though, as three huge movies are rolling into theaters this weekend with Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, and Bumblebee. Even if the new movie falls off, however, the creative team behind it knows that the audience is behind them, and the preparation on the sequel can get underway.

Why John Travolta Is Going For The Bald Look Now

John Travolta's dark head of hair has been famous since the 1970s, from Welcome Back, Kotter to Saturday Night Fever. But Travolta recently decided to shave his head. He didn't do it for a new role but for a new life look. (Still, now that he's bald, I'm thinking he's ready to play Bruce Willis' twin in something.) Travolta was asked if it was true that his friend Pitbull inspired the bald look, and here's how he answered:

Well, [Pitbull was] one of my inspirations, for sure. I mean, I did this, I had this look for a movie called From Paris With Love years ago. But you know, I never thought of wearing it as, like, a full-time look, and then my family said, 'Why don't you shave it for the new year?' and then I dared to put post it on my Instagram. It went crazy, went viral -- which was much more than I ever expected and it made headlines. So I felt like Zoolander or something, you know, and I'm going for it.

Zoolander? This appears to be the New Year's post that got a lot attention, and maybe it's showing his Blue Steel look:

That photo did seem to get fans talking at the time, with many appreciating his new look. (I'm not the only one who saw Bruce Willis; some fans suggested John Travolta join his Pulp Fiction co-star in the new Die Hard movie).

According to John Travolta's interview with ET, Pitbull only had a relatively small influence on the new look. However, on December 14, John Travolta introduced his friend Armando Christian Perez, aka Pitbull, at his handprint and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre. In that photo, Travolta definitely has a full head of hair.

Just a few days ago, John Travolta showed off his bald look again in an Instagram photo with Mariah Carey:

John Travolta may be embracing the bald look now, but he'll probably rock more interesting wigs for future roles. He's had some crazy hairstyles in the past, particularly in Battlefield Earth, but also Pulp Fiction, his recent film Gotti (photo at top), and the one he just mentioned, From Paris With Love, which showed him bald with a goatee. Here's that look from the 2010 film:

John Travolta isn't doing the same goatee thing at this point, but he does appear to be growing out a grey-ish beard. He's 64, and this is probably one of his better looks, so good for him.

John Travolta gave his bald interview while attending the Super Bowl with his son. What's he been doing on the film front? He's had a rocky time lately -- especially last year with Gotti. IT 2 Is Looking To Add Jessica Chastain

Because the IT novel is so long, New Line Cinema wisely made the decision to split its adaptation of the Stephen King story into two movies. Last year's IT focused on the Losers' Club's conflict with Pennywise the Dancing Clown when they were kids, and while we'll revisit the characters in their adolescent years through flashbacks in IT 2, the sequel will primarily focus on the protagonists returning to Derry, Maine as adults to defeat Pennywise once and for all. Now word has come in that Jessica Chastain is being eyed to play the adult Beverly Marsh, who was played by Sophia Lillis in the first movie.

Jessica Chastain's name has been tossed around a lot as someone who could play Beverly Marsh in IT 2 over the last few months from both fans and director Andy Muschietti. Chastain herself even expressed interest in the role, saying enjoyed working with Muschietti and his sister, producer Barbara Muschietti, on Mama. Now Variety is reporting that the actress is in negotiations to play Beverly in IT 2. Official talks didn't begin until a few weeks ago, and with the script still being worked on, it's still early in the discussion stages. It was rumored that Chastain was supposed to cameo in an IT post-credits scene, but this was ultimately scrapped.

If a deal is finalized, Jessica Chastain joining IT 2 would be a major score. While the IT cast was certainly talented, none of the actors are big names in Hollywood, but Chastain is one of the most recognizable actresses working in the industry right now, with her recent credits including The Martian, Miss Sloane and Molly's Game, the latter of which she was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year. It helps that Chastain has prior experience working with the Muschiettis, so ideally this means the chances of her getting to play Beverly Marsh are relatively strong. With the incredible amount of money that IT made at the box office (more than $700 million off a $35 million budget), the sequel can certainly afford to snag some A-list talent.

Aside from Bill Skarsgard expected to reprise Pennywise, Jessica Chastain is the first performer who's been mentioned as being in contention to join IT 2. It will be interesting to see if the other members of the Losers Club will be played by Hollywood stars or if lesser-known actors will be cast, though the young IT stars provided their picks last year. Andy Muschietti will once again be sitting in the director's chair, and Gary Dauberman is penning the script.

IT 2 will scare its way into theaters on September 6, 2019. While we wait for more news about the sequel, Jessica Chastain will next appear in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which will be released on November 2.
