Important Lessons Hollywood Can Learn From 2018's Halloween

While Halloween has always been one of the biggest brands in horror, no previous release in the franchise has been as immediately successful as David Gordon Green's new movie. In just three days the sequel managed to make more money than any other previous chapter did in their respective theatrical runs, and the goal was accomplished in part because the film has been riding high on a wave of positive buzz for nearly a month.

There is no questioning the massive accomplishments of the new Halloween -- and that success deserves analysis and recognition. This is largely because there are particular moves that the film made in its development to which other studios should definitely pay close attention. They break down into five lessons in total, so let's dive in:

Remakes Are DumbIs that a broad generalization? Of course. History is filled with filmmakers taking clever new ideas and crafting fantastic re-dos. At the same time, however, when you consider what the new Halloween has brought to the table, the benefits of the long-awaited-sequel over the straight remake are entirely clear. Not only do the numbers agree, with David Gordon Green's movie projected to earn more than double the box office of director Rob Zombie's two reboot entries (combined) a decade ago, but there's also no debating the creative opportunities presented by one tactic over the other.

Not being a remake, the new Halloween doesn't specifically speak to the weakness of remakes -- but what it does show is just the immense possibility that comes part and parcel with a sequel approach. In this particular case it look a bit of extra tinkering with the franchise timeline (more on that in a second), but the willingness to tell a 40-years-later story is the real key to the film's success. Rather than just running over treaded territory to create a facsimile, the movie instead has the chance to perfectly reflect on what came before and utilize it imaginatively and engagingly.

There's no point in hitting the reset button when there is strong material to build on, and we are getting to a point in Hollywood where decision-makers are starting to figure that out.

Continuity Can Be Flexible -- But Be CarefulFranchise continuity is a tricky thing. On the one hand it can be immensely rewarding for fans, as it's a lot of fun to recognize narrative directions and details setup by elements from previous chapters. On the other hand, though, crafting a strong continuity leaves a serious vulnerability to bad choices that wind up sticking around. In its own way, 2018's Halloween gets around this, essentially picking and choosing what it wants represented from the series' past, and it should be recognized that it's a big key to what lets the film work.

Prior to the arrival of David Gordon Green and co-writer Danny McBride, the Halloween franchise mostly consisted of straight-up bad Michael Myers stories and one cool unrelated feature about creepy masks that turn kids' brains into bugs and snakes. Paying attention to all this sub-par material would have legitimately hampered major creative decisions, and so they took an important and ultimately successful gamble that made the film better. This isn't something that any series can do, but there are major brands that could use some retconning without going all the way back to square one/the remake approach.

Original Architects MatterPart of the reason why the Halloween franchise lost its way can be traced back to its relationship with its creator: John Carpenter. After writing the original Halloween II, and producing Halloween III: Season Of The Witch, Carpenter's association with the brand came to an end -- and to avoid being repetitive, things didn't go well from there. The new movie is a major exception, in that it had it had the creator involved at the earliest stages, and the influence of that move is something that a lot of other series should acknowledge.

John Carpenter wasn't an overly aggressive creative voice behind the making of the new Halloween, but he did have two key roles. The first was as an executive producer, consulting on ideas and offering advice; but perhaps more importantly he also composed the beautiful and terrifying soundtrack -- helping evoke the magnificent atmosphere of his original. Even on a larger scale it's an influence that can't necessarily be fully defined, as it adds a certain level of credibility that can't otherwise be provided.

It's true that not every filmmaker is going to be comfortable in the position that John Carpenter took in this scenario, but at the same time it seems in most cases it would be worth the exploration given the potential outcome.

Don't Underestimate The Weight That Can Be Delivered By Veteran StarsJamie Lee Curtis has played many memorable roles over the course of her career, but the part that has made her an icon is Laurie Strode. She was the young woman with the fortitude to escape and defeat Michael Myers as a teenager back on Halloween night in 1978, and 40 years later we now get to see how she faces him down as an adult. And it's quite special. More than your average horror movie, the new Halloween packs a punch with its depiction of Laurie, who has never been able to fully get over the night she almost murdered. It's a complex and powerful portrayal with immense credit belonging to Curtis, who delivers a phenomenal and deeply committed performance.

In coming back to the part of Laurie Strode (albeit for the fourth time), Jamie Lee Curtis used the approach of the new Halloween to pay extra special attention to the life of her character -- tracing back her experiences all the way to the beginning. The results are simply awesome, and much like the influence of John Carpenter, they can't be simply replaced. It's theoretically easy, and always adds something special to the end experience.

A Twist Of Meta Never HurtsPart of the life of any fan (of anything) is having high standards. Given personal investment of time and energy, we perpetually want to be rewarded with content that we can appreciate on a personal level. This, of course, provides a seriously challenging atmosphere for any creative who wants to take on any beloved property -- but there is a secret that the new Halloween exploits brilliantly. The key is employing nods and hints that let fans know that they are being heard and respected, and speak to them directly.

More than just characters talking about the myth that Michael Myers and Laurie Strode are brother and sister, Halloween lovingly plays with your expectations -- especially when it reverses classic elements (like having Laurie randomly appear and disappear just like her attacker). Not only does the material read as being smart and on-the-ball, but the meta pokes are also just a great deal of fun for an audience to experience. Above all, fans just want to know that they are being heard, and this is a spectacular way to do just that.

Before 2018, Netflix made a bold statement. The streaming provider intended the year to be one of their biggest, with 80 original films as a goal for greatness. Not only was this goal met, but with a strategy that mixes acquisitions of already completed projects along with the originals that Netflix produced themselves, the company exceeded its wildest dreams. You could say that 2018 has been the year of Netflix, and the following films are all proof that the film industry has been changed because of the hard work the company has done to diversify the library of originals.

The Cloverfield ParadoxAt the beginning of the year, The Cloverfield Paradox didn't have a title, a release date, or even a concrete plan for unveiling itself to the world. Out of nowhere, the rumors that Netflix had acquired the completed film, previously known as God Particle, lead to an ad campaign and release strategy that totally changed the game. Not only did The Cloverfield Paradox advertise its release with a stealth Super Bowl ad, but the company dropped the film right after the big game. With this big move, Netflix proved that not only could a film be kept secret until the very last moment, but that their surprise release scheduling would work like gangbusters for highly anticipated films and TV shows.

Mowgli: Legend Of The JungleAlso a major studio acquisition, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle saw Warner Bros teaming up with Netflix to distribute a film that might not have made it in the wild. Director Andy Serkis' more mature adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, Mowgli had been talked about since Disney's newer live-action version went into production around the same time. If the studio had followed the original plan, the film would have been released theatrically at the beginning of October. But, thanks to an assist from Netflix, what could have been a box office loss for Warner Bros became a quick release for the beginning of Netflix's December portfolio.

AnnihilationNot every major studio release that Netflix touches has to skip the theaters. In another partnership with Paramount Pictures, the studio offered a very strategic boost to Alex Garland's mind bending sci-fi thriller. Rather than totally take over the film's distribution, Annihilation found itself on its theatrical release track domestically, with the international piece of the pie going to Netflix shortly after. RomaWhile Netflix does already have an Oscar, courtesy of last year's documentary Icarus, you can bet that the content provider still wants to keep their edge when it comes to awards glory. They just might have it in 2019, as the prestige season has seen Alfonso Cuaron's Roma go from a promising original to their first narrative triumph that's been bandied about as an awards player. The critical acclaim that's been building around the film has not only put Netflix in the mouths of film professionals far and wide in this year's road to the Oscars, but it's shown that the studio is truly a power player in the industry, ready to scrap for the next big thing from impressive directors such as Cuaron.

To All The Boys I've Loved BeforeAnother way Netflix diversified its film portfolio in 2018 is by the way of various projects aimed at the ever important teen rom-com audience. The film adaptation of Jenny Han's book of the same name not only saw some pretty impressive reviews surface in its favor, it also saw the internet totally take to it like a heartsick teen pines over that one special crush. With such a strong response, and Netflix finding a new way to promote their films more heavily through the approval of internet culture, it's no surprise this film already has a sequel in the works.

The Christmas ChroniclesHoliday movies have become a bit of a cottage industry, through various networks and distributors. Never one to turn away from a trend, Netflix dipped their toes into the market themselves, and The Christmas Chronicles was one of their biggest successes in 2018. A wildly successful Christmas movie that proved Kurt Russell's still got it, this holiday hit just might become a yearly tradition for the millions of folks that watched it this past season. Not to mention, the immediate success allegedly translated into a $200 million opening week, which has the industry scrambling to replicate that sort of success, as well as stats geeks trying to gin up a formula for how popular any Netflix film is at any given time. But, above all else, The Christmas Chronicles has proven that Kurt Russell's Santa is, 100%, a daddy.

The Other Side Of The WindIf it wasn't for Netflix, we'd never have gotten Orson Welles' legendary final film, The Other Side of the Wind. A film that sat on the shelves for several decades, a failed Kickstarter push was once the only hope the world ever had of seeing this tale of filmmaking and mortality hit a screen of any size. But once Netflix jumped into the fray, the long-awaited editing process was completed, and The Other Side of the Wind was born. While the company has its fingers on the pulse of what's modern and meme-worth, this project shows just how experimental Netflix truly is, while at the same time paying its dues to the Hollywood greats that came before it.

MuteMuch like Orson Welles' unique visions in the past, there are auteurs in the film industry that need a home for their elusive visions. Director Duncan Jones had been working on Mute for so long, it was technically supposed to be his first film. ApostleThere's a chance that, should Apostle have been released by a major studio, it would have run into just as massive controversies. A film tackling humanity, religious zealotry, and the treatment of the environment, it would have challenged some, while pissing off others. No major studio would have picked Gareth Evans' film up, and even the indie studios operating today would have had trouble offering a budget without some sort of concessions. But the way things turned out, Netflix provided a home for the film that existed against the odds, allowing Apostle to make a spooky splash just in time for Halloween. Judging by what made it onto the screen, it looks like the full monty made it into the final product.

The Ballad of Buster ScruggsInitially, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was supposed to be a marvel for the fact that it would have brought the Coen Bros to the realm of TV for the first time. For a while, the world expected it to arrive in such a fashion. However, like a bolt out of the blue, Netflix announced that the anthology of western flavored stories would be converted into a film, changing the plan completely as to how these stories would be enjoyed. Most other distributors probably would blanch at the idea, but with their feet in both the worlds of TV and movies, the switch was easy both in terms of strategy and in the actual distribution of the film. As a sort of "all in one" production house, Netflix has the latitude to do such things, as they pretty much market it all the same way, and direct everyone to their portal to enjoy.

Creed II Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Are Saying

The Rocky film series proper officially wrapped up in 2006 with Rocky Balboa, but the mythology continues through the Creed spinoffs. In 2015, we met Adonis Creed, the son of the late Apollo Creed, and with Rocky Balboa in his corner, Adonis' journey to the big leagues echoed Rocky's own journey four decades earlier. Now we're reuniting with him in Creed II, where he's facing off against Viktor Drago, son of Ivan Drago, the man who killed Apollo in Rocky IV. Creed II is less than a week away from theaters, but reviews are now coming in, and it sounds like this movie is a decent follow-up to the first Creed movie, even if it doesn't do quite enough to stand on its own.

Starting off, CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes awarded Creed II 4 out of 5 stars in his review, saying it did just as good of a job as Creed "when it comes to pumping an audience up." The sequel asks the question, 'What are you fighting for?', and while Adonis is the main character having to answer this, resulting in both his body and heart being challenged, but the other important characters also deal with that question, allowing the cast to be used to their full potential. There are issues with pacing and not exploring the Drago family's post-Rocky IV history enough, but these don't detract from the movie being "totally inspiring."

Creed II is absolutely exhilarating, touching gloves with the audience & knocking out expectations.

Uproxx's Mike Ryan echoed these sentiments, highlighting how Creed II works well as a sequel of sorts to Rocky IV. With Adonis being Apollo Creed's son, it stands to reason that eventually Ivan Drago would have to be directly addressed in the Creed movies. But rather than tease out a confrontation with the Drago family over several movies like this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Creed II jumps straight into the action, and as a result, the movie "feels pleasantly refreshing with its retro-ness."

...At its core, Creed II is about family. It's about Adonis Creed's relationship with Bianca and his continuing reconciliation with Apollo. It's about Ivan Drago and his son, and where the line is drawn when it comes to personal redemption. And it's about Rocky, struggling with the very few people he has left who he considers "family." For a movie that features a dramatic fight between people with the last name Creed and Drago, it's strangely sad and reflective.

Variety's Owen Gleiberman complimented Creed II for being a "rousing and effective sequel," and even though much of its content feels familiar, there are a "couple of surprise punches" thrown in to keep us on our toes. However, compared to Creed or some of the earlier Rocky movies, the sequel feels "less exhilarating and more programmatic," though there's still enough to appreciate from it. Michael B. Jordan in particular delvers a great performance.

Creed II has been made with heart and skill, and Jordan invests each moment with such fierce conviction that he makes it all seem like it matters. Even if it all mattered a notable notch more in Creed.

Tom Jorgensen from IGN saw Creed II in a more mixed light, giving it a 6 out of 10. Despite the movie's lesson being that the only way to live up to a legacy is to create your own, Tom felt that Creed II doesn't have much of an identity on its own, as it's so heavily entrenched in what went down in Rocky IV. Subsequently, both of the Drago men fail to make much of an impression. However, Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson's respective characters help carry the movie through its "shakier parts."

Adonis' story continues in Creed II, but the lackluster Dragos nearly break him and his budding franchise.

Angie Han from Mashable felt similarly, noting that in some ways Creed II feels like a "regression" from its predecessor. However, the sequel still works for the most part, whether it's "finding personality" in everyday events to the "odd sympathy" it engenders for Ivan and Viktor Drago. However, assuming this film series moves forward, Angie mentioned that it could learn a lesson from Adonis and "start making a name on its own" rather than keep looking back to the past.

It's not quite as smart as Creed, or quite as beautiful, and it doesn't have as much depth or nuance or texture. But it's got enough to deliver something satisfying and sweet.

Finally, Entertainment Weekly's Chris Nashawaty gave Creed II a B+. In his review, he said that while it may have seemed desperate for Creed II to follow up on the events of Rocky IV, it actually worked for this movie. In the end, it serves as an "effective" sequel, though it's probably not a good idea for a hypothetical Creed III to not follow suit and do something like bring in Clubber Lang and his son as adversaries.

The Land director Steven J. Caple Jr. has made a rousing tale about fathers and sons, guilt and redemption, loneliness and family -- just the sort of big, sledgehammer-subtle themes that have always propelled the series.

Overall, it sounds like Creed II will be enjoyable enough for fans of the Rocky franchise, even it relies a little too much on the past and doesn't to enough to build something special for itself. We'll have to wait and see whether the Creed franchise continues after this particular movie, but if it does, whoever helms the next installment will probably want to take measures to make it feel more unique.
