Disneys New Streaming Service Is Finally Casting Its First Movie

As the media landscape continues to change, and an exponentially increasing amount of content competes for our dollars, it takes a lot to make a splash. Yet a cannonball-sized splash is what Disney is expected to make when it launches its own streaming service next year. The Netflix competitor will feature the studio's vast library, as well as new original series and movies made specifically for the platform. As 2019 approaches, one of the first of those original movies has begun casting. Disney has tapped Grace VanderWaal for the lead role in the movie Stargirl.

If you're unfamiliar with that name, that's because this will be Grace VanderWaal's acting debut. The 14-year-old first came onto the scene when she won America's Got Talent two years ago by singing her original songs while playing the ukulele. Since then, she has released an EP and debut album, and she is touring with Imagine Dragons this summer. Stargirl director Julia Hart, whose latest film Fast Color premiered at SXSW this year, was sold on Grace VanderWaal almost from the start. According to Deadline, the young singer beat out 700 other girls to land the lead role of Stargirl.

Stargirl is based on a young adult novel of the same name by author Jerry Spinelli. Told from the point of view of a boy named Leo, Stargirl tells the story of the titular character who, after years of home schooling, enters a public high school. She captures the imaginations of her peers with her eccentricities, kindness and individuality. The character of Stargirl also plays the ukulele, just like Grace VanderWaal. But as with all popular things, there is a backlash and her classmates turn on her, resulting in Leo compelling her to just be normal. The story stresses the importance of individuality and being yourself. Stargirl also spawned a sequel titled Love, Stargirl, so you can bet that may be coming down the line should Stargirl perform well for Disney's streaming service.

Judging by her performance on America's Got Talent, it is clear that Grace VanderWaal has talent, at least in the musical department. If that holds true for acting, and the huge casting process for Stargirl indicates that it does, then this film that holds such an important message for a young audience is off to a good start. The other thing about Stargirl is that it sounds like the right kind of title for this streaming service.

A story like this may not get a lot of traction in the blockbuster-heavy theatrical release slate, but it will have an opportunity to find its audience on Disney's streaming platform. Sweet stories with this kind of message actually remind me of Disney Channel's Original Movies that once were proving grounds for young stars. It is cool that among the Star Wars series and Marvel properties that will anchor the service, there is still room for these types of stories.

As David Gordon Green's take on Halloween looms closer to release, to say fans are merely excited would be an understatement. The upcoming horror film is a direct sequel to the 1978 John Carpenter classic, and based on what we know about the film so far, it's heavily drawing on the original. Based on the terrifying trailer, fans have already spotted quite a few references to the first Halloween and more findings keep popping up. While looking at an image recently released by Entertainment Weekly, one fan shared one intricate detail found in both the original and the new sequel. Take a look.

Your eyes don't deceive you, it looks like the Halloween filmmakers decided to add in a summer hat in the 2018 release identical to one that hangs on the walls in Laurie Strode's room back in 1978. This is a deep cut that even hardcore Halloween franchise devotees might not have noticed at first glance, but this fan couldn't help but share his findings. With Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie, exactly 40 years after she was stalked and chased by the frightening Michael Myers, it seems like no stone has been unturned to pay tribute to the original and make it feel directly related to the 70s film.

Since the first footage for Halloween was screened, it's been clear that director David Gordon-Green and co-writer Danny McBride closely noted the original while crafting their film. Everything from shot choices, to the unforgettable music, and story elements calls back to the horror film that started it all. It not only pays tribute to the original movie but adds quite a bit of fan service for those who have been re-watching and geeking out about Halloween since '78.

Halloween will implement a recent trend seen on streaming platforms in their film, as audiences will follow a crew of true-crime documentary filmmakers who are heading to Haddonfield. Before making their way to the suburbs in Illinois where the first horrifying events took place, they pay a visit to Michael Myers, who is locked up in a high-security hospital. Soon after, Myers escapes the facility and heads to Laurie to finish off the job, but this time the now 59-year-old woman is ready for him. While the new film will ignore the events of the sequels, but the Gordon-Green did previously comment that they will also saluting some of the other Halloween films with little easter eggs.

Let this detail serve as another teaser to get fans amped for this Halloween sequel coming to theaters on October 19. The film looks to be an impressive love letter to John Carpenter's horror classic and an intriguing continuation of the events that has haunted heroine Laurie Strode for 40 years.

Why Star Wars: The Last Jedi Didn't Include Han Solo's Funeral

Harrison Ford's return to the Star Wars franchise more than three decades after Return of the Jedi's release was short-lived. As advertised, Han Solo played a major role in The Force Awakens, but towards the end of the movie, he met his demise at the hands of his own son, Ben, a.k.a. Kylo Ren. It was a tragic moment, to be sure, and with The Last Jedi taking place immediately after The Force Awakens, there was rumblings that the latest Star Wars movie would feature Han's funeral. Alas, such a scene wasn't shown in The Last Jedi, as director Rian Johnson felt that there wasn't enough time to pause and grieve more for the beloved smuggler. Johnson explained:

[There was no debate of showing Han Solo's funeral], just because pacing-wise it didn't have a place. It's tough in Star Wars because I always think about the mourning that Luke gives to Ben's death, which is all of four-and-a-half seconds before, 'Come on kid we're not out of this yet' and then boom, you're into 'Yay, woo-hoo! Don't get cocky!' There's the moment for it, but it's not long. We don't have time for our sorrows, commanders. That's kind of the thing of Star Wars; you don't really linger on grief because you're moving forward.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn't waste any time jumping into the action, as The Resistance had to evacuate D'Qar when The First Order arrived to unleash its revenge for the destruction of Starkiller Base. So because of the quick pacing, Rian Johnson believed there just wasn't room to fit in Han Solo's funeral, noting how Luke Skywalker didn't have long to mourn Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope before he had to start shooting down TIE Fighters with Han. With all the insanity happening after The Last Jedi's opening crawl, pausing to watch his allies play one last tribute to him just wasn't doable.

However, later during the Collider Q&A, Rian Johnson did mention that for one of the early scenes, he had the camera linger on General Leia Organa for a little bit to show her being weighed down by everything that was happening, including Han Solo's recent death. Johnson said:

I think we do it a little more in this movie than typically is done. I really held onto that moment of Leia before they come out of hyperspace, just that moment of feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders... It was never something where there was an organic place for it like, 'Oh it would go here.' It was always something like, 'We wanna get this right up on our feet and going from the start.'

It's worth noting that even though Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn't show Han Solo's funeral, fans will still have the opportunity to see this event depicted. It was announced last week that The Last Jedi novelization, which hits shelves on March 6, will feature the funeral as one of the pieces of extra material included in this version of the story. So for those of you who wanted to see The Resistance give a proper goodbye to Han, make sure to pick up a copy of the book next month.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still showing in theaters, and this trilogy will conclude when Episode IX is released on December 20, 2019. For those of you interested in what Han Solo was up to in his younger years, you can find out when Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives on May 25.

Filmmaking can be an incredibly arduous process, and sometimes accidents can happen on set. Even on a lighthearted project such as Warner Bros. upcoming comedy, Tag, Jeremy Renner ended up suffering two broken arms after falling 20 feet from a stack of chairs while filming one of Tag's many action sequences. The story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe actor breaking his arms has become one of the most wince-worthy Hollywood tales in recent memory, and Renner himself apparently had no interest in watching the footage of the accident afterward. In a recent interview, Renner explained:

After production, they said, 'Hey, do you want to actually see the fall?' And I'm like, 'Uh, no. I'm good.' I have that attitude of you fall down seven times and you stand up eight. I don't know about 20 feet seven times (laughs). It was just one time I had to do that.

I can't necessarily say that I blame Jeremy Renner for this take on the situation. Though the folks behind Tag did have footage of the fall that broke both of his arms, he opted not to watch the scene. In fact, the way that he looked at it, he only really did it once -- the time that he got it right. They simply CGI'd his arms to look normal, and then proceeded with the rest of the shoot.

Though it may seem odd to learn that such intense stunt work went into the making of an R-rated buddy comedy, there's actually some story-based rationale for the move. Based on a true story, Tag centers its narrative on a group of friends who have played the same game of tag every May for the last three decades. However, when Jerry (Renner) -- the one member of the group who has never been tagged -- opts to retire after his wedding, the group decided to descend upon the wedding weekend and finally get him. As Renner explained in his interview with USA Today, much of Jerry's personality is rooted in an ultra-competitive streak, so it was essential to embrace the physicality of the role.

Also worth noting about Jeremy Renner's injury is the continued emphasis on falling down seven times and getting up eight. This seems to be a running theme with the actor, as he even captioned a gruesome social media post with that remark after his injury. Check it out, below.

Despite how much Jeremy Renner hurt himself while working on Tag, he didn't let his injury dictate how he would proceed with other projects on his plate. In fact, the actor also recently opened up about his injury's effect on his portrayal of Hawkeye in Avengers 4 over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and noted that he couldn't let it slow him down.
