Gal Gadot Is Joining The Murder On The Orient Express Sequel

Gal Gadot Is Joining The Murder On The Orient Express Sequel

One of the big selling points of last year's remake of Murder on the Orient Express was the cast. A mix of veteran actors and new stars including Kenneth Branagh, Daisey Ridley, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Penlope Cruz, Judi Dench and Willem Dafoe all gave audiences plenty of familiar faces to follow in the murder mystery. The sequel to that film, an adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile, will see Belgian detective Hercule Poirot solving an entirely new crime involving an entirely new set of characters, thus necessitating a new cast. That casting process has begun the first name attached is none other than Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot.

The Wonder Woman actress is the first name set for the cast of Death on the Nile, with Kenneth Branagh not yet officially signed on to reprise his role as Hercule Poirot. According to Deadline, Gal Gadot has joined the film in the role of Linnet Ridgeway Doyle, a rich heiress and socialite who does not believe in girl code since she marries Simon, her best friend's fianc. Hercule Poirot encounters Linnet while on holiday on a luxurious Nile River cruise. As you might guess, just like Murder on the Orient Express, a murder occurs in this confined space, and master detective Hercule Poirot must put his vacation on hold to solve the crime from-- sorting through the passengers to see whom among them is the killer.

If Gal Gadot's casting is a harbinger of things to come, it seems that 20th Century Fox will again be looking to gather a big name cast for this Agatha Christie adaptation. It's hard to say if it was the cast, or the iconic franchise, but Murder on the Orient Express was actually one of the low-key successes at the box office last year. Despite never coming in higher than third place at the domestic box office, the Kenneth Branagh film still went on to earn $102.8 million domestically as part of a $352.8 million worldwide haul-- all on a production budget of around $55 million.

Death on the Nile could be just the beginning for Hercule Poirot and these Agatha Christie murder mysteries on the big screen. The man behind the big screen detective, Kenneth Branagh, has expressed interest in Death on the Nile and its sequels building towards a cinematic universe. And with Agatha Christie's 33 novels and 50+ short stories featuring the Belgian detective, there's certainly more than enough material to do so.

Kenneth Branagh is returning to direct Death on the Nile based on a script by Murder on the Orient Express screenwriter, Michael Green. Death on the Nile is set to release in theaters on December 20, 2019 in a bold attempt at counterprogramming to Star Wars: Episode IX, which releases the same day. Check out all of next year's biggest movies in our 2019 release schedule.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Ant-Man And The Wasp Ticket

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Ant-Man And The Wasp Ticket

Coming on the heels of Avengers: Infinity War is a very different sort of film with Ant-Man in the Wasp. While Marvel's last movie was full of heavy drama and life and death stakes, the sequel to Ant-Man promises to be a bit lighter and have some fun.

How well it succeeds is a question for the review. You can find that here. Or, give the latest episode of ReelBlend a spin. The hosts of our new podcast break the film down, FREE of spoilers!

The question we want to answer right now, however, is if it's worth it to you to spend the additional money on a 3D showing of Ant-Man and the Wasp. We break down the good and the bad of the film's 3D below, so you can make an informed decision.

Superhero action movies are almost always a good fit for 3D presentation. There's always a lot going on, including great action and visually stunning special effects. 3D gives the characters another dimension to move in, and can give the action a very different feel. Ant-Man and the Wasp might be even more fitting for a 3D film than you're average special effects blockbuster, as the additional dimension means that as the movie plays with the size of characters and objects, it gets to play with their depth as well as their height.

It's clear that the filmmakers knew they had the ability to do some interesting 3D work, as the movie feels like it was filmed specifically to take advantage of it. The 3D allows tiny objects on the screen to pop a bit more, making them easier to follow. The 3D also means that when Ant-Man and the Wasp shrink down to insect size, the rest of the world feels all the more massive and imposing. Even in the simple shots that aren't full of CGI, care is taken to make everything feel deep and real.

Part of the fun of 3D movies is when objects come flying out of the screen toward the audience. Some may think it's a gimmick, but done right, it can add to the experience in fun ways. Ant-Man and the Wasp clearly knows it has this space to play with, and while it doesn't ignore it entirely, this is the one place where you feel it could have done more. When some tiny object grows to an incredible size it feels like they should start to fall in your lap, and while they do push the boundaries of the front of the screen, it never really goes beyond that.

Where Ant-Man and the Wasp lacks in before the window 3D, it more than makes up for it behind. San Francisco feels like a real city when you get to see it stretch out beyond the foreground action. When our heroes are tiny everything around them feels massive and imposing thanks to the depth of the 3D and when objects grow beyond their normal size the added depth makes them feel more tangible and real. Action fills the background as well as the foreground, and moves between the two effortlessly.

Brightness is a tough category to judge objectively because, to some degree, this is dictated by the brightness of the projector being used, meaning different theaters can have different experiences. However, I had no particular issues with the brightness of the Ant-Man and the Wasp. This is at least partially aided by the fact that there simply aren't many dark scenes in the movie on the whole. The movie is bright in every sense of the term. As such, the natural dimming that 3D glasses provide is never so much that following the action becomes difficult.

The glasses off test is entirely unscientific but it can be a gauge of just how much depth is being created on the screen. The blurrier the image is when you take the glasses off, the more work is being done. This was tested for me at the very beginning of the film when my screening started with essentially no warning, so I didn't have my glasses on yet. Even the simple image of a house at night, a shot that doesn't need excessive 3D, was hard to look at. Other sequences in the film are downright unwatchable.

Motion sickness isn't an issue of mine outside the teacups at Disneyland and nothing in Ant-man and the Wasp is anywhere close to that. However, my guest at the screening found the opening sequence of the movie to include some motion that felt a little off and I thought the first major action sequence making my eyes cross slightly as I tried to follow all the motion with the added 3D. Nothing here is a dealbreaker, but just some stuff to be aware of.

Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't perfect when it comes to 3D, but it is an absolutely solid presentation. If you tend to see your action movies in 3D, you absolutely won't be disappointed. If you're a movie fan who tends to be more on the fence when it comes to the technology, it may be worth it to take the plunge with this one. There is some really impressive technical work done here that is worth seeing in its own right, but it also adds to the fun of the experience of the film itself.

Palpatine's Return For The Rise Of Skywalker Raises Major Questions

Palpatine's Return For The Rise Of Skywalker Raises Major Questions

At last weeks Star Wars Celebration, we finally got our long-awaited first look at J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode IX in the form of a teaser trailer. From Reys lightsaber acrobatics to the return of Lando Calrissian to the intriguing title, the trailer gave us plenty to discuss, but the moment that made Star Wars fans lose their minds came at the end of the Rise of Skywalker trailer when we heard the laugh of franchise villain and presumed dead Sith Lord, Emperor Palpatine.

It was a hell of a tag to end the trailer on, and just so there's no ambiguity, J.J. Abrams confirmed to Empire's James Dyer that Ian McDiarmid's Emperor Palpatine is in the movie. This is incredibly exciting for a Sequel Trilogy that is arguably in need of a truly fearsome villain after the death of Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Yet while this cackling fan service-y reveal seemed to go a long way towards getting everyone amped for Star Wars again, Emperor Palpatines return opens up a whole can of worms (or Exogorth space slugs if you prefer).

Both in-story and on a macro level for the franchise as a whole, Palpatines return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker raises major questions that will need to be answered by the time the final credits roll in December. There is a lot to unpack and we may know more as we get closer to the films release, but these are some of the most obvious questions that come to mind.

Does Palpatine's Return Diminish The End Of Return Of The Jedi?Until Disney bought Lucasfilm and announced a new Star Wars trilogy in 2012, 1983s Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi was presumed to be the chronological end of the franchise. That was fine because that film wraps up the trilogy in a narratively and thematically satisfying way. After years in service to it, Darth Vader rejects the Dark Side and kills Emperor Palpatine. In doing so, he saves the galaxy from the yoke of the Empire and his son Luke from death at the Emperors hands. Vader then dies as he was born, as Anakin Skywalker.

There is an argument that no matter what form he returns in, Palpatines return in The Rise of Skywalker diminishes that relatively perfect ending. If Darth Sidious still holds some sway in the galaxy, Anakin Skywalkers redemptive act at the end of Return of the Jedi does not have the same level of consequence. Anakins sacrifice still matters, but it does not have the finality that it once did. It is no longer the final victory against that evil, but merely a smaller battle won in an even greater war.

You could say that Vader still saved Luke so that he could one day meet Rey and help her to one day finish Palpatine for good, but its not the same. The manner and form of Palpatines return will matter a lot as far as how this question will be answered, and the execution must be perfect for this not to feel like a forced return for a villain that already had a great death. If nothing else, the fact that J.J. Abrams consulted with George Lucas about the story is encouraging.

Is He Actually Alive?Just because Ian McDiarmid is definitely in The Rise of Skywalker doesnt mean that we will see Emperor Palpatine alive and interacting with the Sequel Trilogy characters in the 'present day.' All we've heard is a laugh; we haven't seen him yet. As far as we know, Sith dont get Force Ghosts, an afterlife trade-off for the spoils they enjoy in the mortal realm. Ian McDiarmid also seemed to indicate that Palpatine is dead, at least to start off the film. Yet there are still ways that he could appear that wouldnt undo the end of Return of the Jedi.

Emperor Palpatine could still be in the film and play a crucial role even if he isnt a Force Ghost or resurrected. One possibility is that he could appear in hologram form. If Rey or Kylo came across a Sith Holocron owned by Darth Sidious, Ian McDiarmids character could impart knowledge and influence events from beyond the grave. Maybe its an arms race between Kylo and a Holocron versus Rey and the Jedi texts. If Palpatine appears via hologram, we would get to see him, but he would still be dead.

Another possibility that is very intriguing is that Palpatine could appear via flashback. The Sequel Trilogy has introduced flashbacks to the Saga and Palpatine flashbacks could provide further insight into this franchise villain. Flashbacks could also be used to answer some of the other questions on this list, like what connections he has to the events taking place in the films present.

If He's Alive, How And In What Form?Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a lot of heavy lifting to do to close out this trilogy and the Skywalker Saga as a whole, and if Darth Sidious returns in physical form, that adds significant weight to that load. This Sequel Trilogy has introduced new wrinkles to the mythology, so maybe being a Force Ghost is on the table, and appearing as a hologram would be easy to do, albeit something of a tease. But an actual physical return would require a lot of explanation.

If Palpatine is alive, as our own Mick Joest suspects, there are several possible explanations. In the jettisoned Expanded Universe, Palpatine had clones made of himself as a safeguard against permanent death. The EU is gone, but Lucasfilm has shown a willingness to cherrypick certain elements from it when needed. Another possibility is that his essence went into some Sith artifact after his body was destroyed, and Kylo Ren discovers it and somehow returns him to life.

There is also the Darth Plagueis elephant in the room. Palpatine indicated to Anakin that Plagueis taught his apprentice everything he knew. Palpatine also told Anakin that he didn't know the secret to saving Padm. This could have been a lie and Palpatine truly did know how to cheat death like his master before him, but misled Anakin because Padm would have only divided Anakins loyalty. Whatever the reason, we need to know how and why he is back and where he has been this whole time.

Was Palpatines Return Always The Plan?We may never know definitively, but based on things that have been said over the years and the ways in which The Last Jedi diverges drastically from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it kind of looks like there was never a definitive and overarching plan for the Sequel Trilogy. So you could be forgiven for thinking that bringing back Sheev Palpatine in Episode IX is a last minute Hail Mary to unite the fanbase and give the Sequel Trilogy the imposing villain (and path to Kylos redemption) it has been lacking.

Speaking with Yahoos Kevin Polowy at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy indicated that Palpatines return has been in the works for a while, but they hadnt decided on how exactly to bring him back. In some ways it makes sense; Palpatine was the big bad in the first two trilogies, so why not have this entire saga be about one familys multigenerational battle against this one great evil. That may be the case, but it definitely makes you wonder why seeds werent really planted in Episode VII or Episode VIII.

Maybe J.J. Abrams is doing things in Episode IX that make Darth Sidious influence in the previous two films more obvious in hindsight (flashbacks perhaps?), but there is definitely a question about if there will be enough time to make it all work. If it was the plan all along, the execution will determine its effectiveness.

What Is His Relationship To Snoke And Kylo Ren?If this were Episode VII, Palpatine could come back with far fewer needles to thread, but as it stands, he is returning in a Sequel Trilogy that has been focused on new, seemingly separate villains. It would be a bit strange to have Palpatine return just for one movie, so I expect The Rise of Skywalker to retroactively hint at his presence and influence throughout this trilogy. That means we need to know his relationship to the other Dark Side users weve met, namely Snoke and Kylo Ren.

Those two are supposedly not official Sith, but the distinction is a bit unclear. It would make Sidious look weak (and make us lament Snokes death) to find out that he was biding his time waiting for Snoke to fall. You havr to think he had some kind of relationship with Snoke. Maybe the late Supreme Leader was a puppet of Palpatines, a proxy while the Emperor worked from the shadows and regained his strength.

There is also a theory that Snoke was Palpatine, i.e. a host body ravaged by the power of the Sith Lord. Snokes obsession with Kylo Rens Skywalker bloodline and desire to make a new Vader certainly had parallels to Palpatines desires to turn Luke. As far as the Knights of Ren are concerned, there was a rumor that they were in The Beyond (Unknown Regions?) this whole time and there they encountered a new threat. If true, Palpatines spirit could have been out there figuring out how to become even more powerful and he finally revealed himself to the Knights of Ren.

How Do The Heroes Kill Him For Good? With historys greatest Sith Lord back to threaten the galaxy once more, and with the Skywalker Saga coming to a close, the heroes only have one movie in which to defeat him, and to bring closure to this saga, he must be completely defeated. But the very fact that he is back when we thought him gone means that killing him will prove quite the task though because if he didnt perish completely after being vaporized at the end of Return of the Jedi, how do the heroes finish him off for good?

If Palpatine is a Force Ghost, wed have to hope Luke could defeat him in that realm (this seems unlikely). If his spirit is still lingering in the galaxy, yet not able to take physical form, a la Sauron, Rey, Finn and Poe will have to figure out how to eliminate it. And if he is back in a body and knows how to cheat death, perhaps this will be a Horcrux situation where the heroes need to eliminate artifacts that his spirit could retreat into, so that when he meets his match he will be mortal once more.

One possibility is that Rey could get her Samwell Tarly on by turning to ancient texts to try and find answers to defeating an existential threat. Those sacred Jedi books have to come into play somehow. Maybe they contain a chapter titled How to Kill a Sith For Good and finding something to do the trick, the films MacGuffin, will be one of the movies major plot points and the journey the heroes go on together.

Bringing Emperor Palpatine back shows that J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm are really swinging for the fences to unite the fanbase and end the Skywalker Saga with a bang. To that end, it is obvious that a lot of people are excited about Emperor Palpatines return, myself included. However, taking a swing this big is no easy thing, it comes with a lot of questions and potential pitfalls, but if they knock it out of the park it could be incredible. If nothing else, weve got plenty to speculate about from now until the next trailer.

Disney Originally Wanted Harry Potter Attractions, But The Plans Were Tiny

Disney Originally Wanted Harry Potter Attractions, But The Plans Were Tiny

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is probably the single biggest property that you can't find in a Disney theme park, but you could have. Disney actually was the first company to start talking to J.K. Rowling about creating attractions around Harry Potter, but it turns out that Disney's plans weren't nearly as grand as you might expect. According to theme park historian Jim Hill...

This was tiny. Itty bitty. There were two attractions. Basically, it was going to be Buzz Lightyear. You were going to be in an Omnimover attraction with a wand instead of a gun, and you were moving through basically a Dark Arts teaching class. The other aspect was going to be a Care of Magical Creatures Petting Zoo.

The idea, as described during Jim Hill Media's Universal Joint podcast, was that Harry Potter would only be given a "mini-land" that would be built in a corner of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. The area would have the two attractions described above, and in addition would have a Leaky Cauldron quick serve food location, which one assumes would serve butterbeer. However, J.K. Rowling wasn't blown away by Disney's ideas, which led her to make a deal instead with Universal Studios theme parks, and the creation of the much more extensive Wizarding World of Harry Potter which now exists in three different theme parks around the world.

While the two attractions described may not be much, they certainly don't sound like bad ideas. Any ride that lets you swing a magic wand in the world of Harry Potter sounds like fun. An attraction similar to the current Buzz Lightyear attraction seems like an odd choice, but one imagines all sorts of dark things surrounding the vehicles that you could blast with a wand and that sounds great.

While the "petting zoo" attraction may also seem a little unlike Disney, Jim Hill explains that it would have contained animatronic magical creatures that guests could actually interact with, such as a hippogriff that would bow to you after you bowed to it. That seems pretty cool. Being able to interact with several of the magical creatures from the Harry Potter movies could have been a lot of fun, even if it was only a simple "petting zoo."

Of course, Disney's loss was Universal's gain in a big way. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was built on a scale that Universal had never undertaken before. However, it has been a remarkable success and has clearly helped Universal compete with the massive mouse house that otherwise pretty much owns the theme park industry.

Universal treats the Wizarding World almost like it's a separate theme park and it seems like most guests do as well. Many seem to go to Universal Orlando really only to see the Harry Potter portion of the park. The rest is just a bonus.

Disney has gone through various periods in the history of their theme parks where they have tried to be frugal and it looks like the Harry Potter opportunity just came along during one of those points. Disney was already spending a lot of money for a massive upgrade of Fantasyland and probably simply didn't have the money to spend on an entirely new land dedicated to Harry Potter.

Of course, in the end, while Disney may not have been willing to spend a bunch of money on Harry Potter, Harry Potter still made Disney spend a bunch of money.

The popularity of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter pushed Walt Disney World to compete in a way they hadn't had to do previously. The loss of Harry Potter may have directly influenced the way that Disney has designed both the Pandora: The World of Avatar land at Disney's Animal Kingdom and the upcoming Star Wars Galaxy's Edge that will be part of both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Clearly, money has been no object in these cases. Galaxy's Edge is the single largest -- and one assumes most expensive -- addition in the history of Disney Parks.

Both lands are much more immersive and complete than anything Disney had done recently. Pandora looks like you stepped off a spacecraft onto the alien planet and while nobody has experienced Batuu yet, every indication is that the new Star Wars land will create a level of guest immersion nobody has experienced before. Whether or not we'd see these lands at all, it seems a safe bet we wouldn't be seeing them in quite the way that we are if it weren't for Universal Studios raising the bar with Harry Potter.

Still, it makes one wonder just what would have happened had Disney won out on the Harry Potter deal. If J.K. Rowling had pushed Disney to do more and the theme park had built their own land on par with the Wizarding World we know, we might not have Pandora or Flight of Passage, the greatest theme park ride currently in existence.

By the same token, if Universal didn't have Harry Potter, the company would have needed to find another major franchise in order to compete with Disney. If they didn't have one, Universal would be in a very different place today.

One also wonders how a Disney/Harry Potter relationship would have worked in the long term. Disney isn't against putting properties in the parks that they don't own. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Avatar all started out as independent brands, but eventually, Disney took ownership of all of them. Disney made sure George Lucas knew the company was interested in Lucasfilm if the day ever came he wanted to sell. If that day ever came with J.K. Rowling with an existing relationship with Disney, it's not hard to guess Walt's company would be equally interested.

If nothing else, this entire exchange just goes to show how important competition is. Universal needed to make Harry Potter a special and unique land in order to compete with Disney, which in turn needed to invest in its own bigger showpieces in order to compete with Universal. In the end, the theme park guests are the big winners as we get to experience it all. The only thing we need now is enough vacation time to actually go to six different theme parks in Orlando on the same trip.
