Dark Phoenix's Director Assures Fans The Movie Connects To X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Back in 2014, X-Men: Days of Future Past brought the original X-Men film series and the First Class series together in a time travel epic that resulted in the timeline being changed and 2023 now being a peaceful time for mutants as opposed to being hunted by Sentinels in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Since then, the main X-Men movies have kept following with the First Class characters in the past, with X-Men: Apocalypse being set in 1983 and the upcoming Dark Phoenix being set in 1992.
Its been all but confirmed that Dark Phoenix will be the final chapter of the X-Men saga that began in 2000, but lest you think this franchise has forgotten about that brighter future ahead for the mutants, director and writer Simon Kinberg stated that he has an idea about how Dark Phoenix will connect to X-Men: Days of Future Past, saying:
I have some sense of it, yes, because I always feel as though I'm sort of responsible for the architecture of this and making sure that it all lines up. So I do have some sense of it, but I really did imagine this movie, in truth, as the culmination of this cycle of X-Men films and so I wasn't really thinking past this film other than wanting to make sure that the logic was all sound.
Whether this means that Dark Phoenix will allude to or establish a direct connection to X-Men: Days of Future Past remains to be seen. However, Simon Kinbergs comments confirm that rather than X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix establishing yet another separate continuity, which would muddy the X-Men film series mythos even more, these events are still leading towards the future shown at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, while simultaneously serving as the last chapter of this iteration of the franchise.
Of course, lets not forget that Logan, which takes place in 2029, revealed that no new mutants had been born in the last 25 years, and the X-Men were no more after Professor X suffered a seizure that unleashed a destructive telepathic wave, killing several mutants. So if you assume that Logan is meant to follow after X-Men: Days of Future Past, then the future still doesnt look good. However, if youd rather consider Logan a one-off tale set in a separate universe, then things will eventually become better for mutants, or at least the ones under Professor Xs care.
In any case, Simon Kinberg also mentioned during his interview with ScreenRant that it was working on X-Men: Days of Future Past that helped him conceive the idea for Dark Phoenix. Kinberg recalled:
I actually would say that the Dark Phoenix idea was was set up in the end of Days of Future Past. In changing the timeline of Days of Future Past, part of the reason I did that was I wanted a chance to tell the Dark Phoenix story in a more fulsome way where it's really like the full Dark Phoenix story and focuses on Jean's story different than X-Men: The Last Stand.
X-Men: The Last Stands adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga was not well-received among fans, particularly because it had to share screen time with the mutant cure storyline. For Dark Phoenix, Jeans corruption is the main attraction and like the source material, it involves aliens. Were only a couple weeks away from learning how Dark Phoenix specifically unfolds, but Jean Grey, Beast, Cyclops, Storm and Professor X (among others) are all still alive in 2023, so we at least know theyll make it out in one piece.

Nicole Kidman is a great actress. One would be extremely hard-pressed to say otherwise. For the past three decades, Kidman has proven herself to be an exceptionally versatile and vulnerable performer, capable of astonishing range and dramatic fortitude, with projects like To Die For and Lion. There are no shortage of strong, powerful performances from Nicole Kidman, and we want to take a moment to highlight a mere few of her exceptional roles throughout her extensive career.
Whether it's comedy, drama, action, adventure, fantasy or musical, to name a few of the genres she has worked in throughout her busy career, Nicole Kidman has provided audiences everywhere with an extensive array of compelling performances, challenging herself in a variety of acclaimed and intriguing titles. While not all of them can be winners (perhaps the less said about 2005's Bewitched or 2007's The Invasion, the better...), Kidman has displayed an impressive and accomplished showcase of her talents, and we want to take this opportunity to highlight a few of our personal favorites.
Now before we ruffle any feathers, we should note some of the films that didn't make the cut. That's not because they weren't worthy of being considered, but because we only have a certain amount of time and space and we can't give every movie its fair due. For instance, after going back and forth, we decided to cut Birth, Margot at the Wedding, Lion, Australia, The Stepford Wives, Dogville, Practical Magic, To Die For, Days of Thunder and, perhaps most controversially, Moulin Rouge.
The reasons vary between personal preference, differing opinions and some critical blind spots in my viewing habits. Nobody is perfect, after all, and I can't say I've seen every movie on Nicole Kidman's resume though I should definitely make a point on catching up on a few. In any case, keep all that in mind. Now, without further ado, here's how we would rank some of the best of Nicole Kidman's movies.
The BeguiledSofia Coppola's 2017 film, The Beguiled, is certainly one that lives up to that title. Filled with intrigue and spellbinding visuals, it's a captivating film. And part of that reason is because Nicole Kidman's subtle, dependable performance carries the film through its soft presentation.
Commanding as ever as the woman who runs a girl school in Virginia in the midst of the Civil War, Nicole Kidman's performance is certainly one that demands respect. In just one glance, she channels so much intensity and ferocity, and for an actress as great and commendable as Kidman, it's great that she is capable of providing so much in such a simple gesture. This movie doesn't get as much attention and notoriety as some of the other films on Nicole Kidman's resume, but it's certainly one that's worth checking out if you are a fan.
StokerPark Chan-Wook's English-language debut, Stoker, is certainly a hard film to describe. A psychological thriller written by Wentworth Miller and brought to the same sort of chilling conclusion as some of Chan-Wook's other noteworthy films, it is probably best to leave the details of the plot a mystery if you haven't had a chance to see the film for yourself. But if you're looking for a good reason to see Stoker, one would certainly be Nicole Kidman's performance.
The actress once again displays the ruthless energy that is found in her best work, displaying a commendable sense of conviction and devastation in even a single utterance of a well-written sentence. The result is a ferocious performance that also contains the tenderness found inside her best work.
The OthersNicole Kidman has found herself inside the horror genre more times than one would assume, as displayed in this article. But to date, one of her most memorable genre exercises remains the tense, twisty tale of The Others. Allowing the actress to display her strengths in a genre that at the time was not at one of its peaks, the result is another compelling performance in a role that once again allows the actress to flourish.
To reveal too much more would probably be unkind, since the film relies quite heavily on its twists, but The Others has become in one of the actress' most popular films. And while the horror genre doesn't always garner the best reviews often unjustly this film remains one of the most celebrated and acclaimed films on her resume, which is certainly saying something, considering the number of high-grade movies she has starred in.
PaddingtonWho can hate sweet, dear Paddington? The formal, well-spoken and immensely polite little British bear is one of the kindest, sweetest souls to make his way to the big screen in quite some time. And while the trailers for 2015's film adaptation, the appropriately-titled Paddington, were dire, the film turned out to be a ravenous surprise, filled with great bouts of wit, charm and flights of whimsy. It's hard not to fall instantly in love with Paddington.
With that said, Nicole Kidman really had her work cut out for her in this family-friendly romp. As the villain of the movie, she had to do something damn near impossible: be antagonistic to that lovely English cub. Nevertheless, it's a major credit to her acting talents that she not only pulled it off, but pulled it off so convincingly. As if audience members needed more reasons to root for Paddington, Nicole Kidman provided them plentifully here. And while it's easily among Nicole Kidman's most well-liked and well-reviewed movies, it's not entirely fair to call it a "Nicole Kidman movie." Hence, why it is a little lower in this ranking than it would've otherwise been.
Cold MountainThough it doesn't get remarked upon quite as often now as it did in the decade prior, Cold Mountain is a commendable, richly textured tale. And it's made even stronger by its three central performances from Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger. The film demands a lot out of its viewer through its two-and-a-half hour runtime. And it does like to take its time in slow, contemplative measures. Yet, through the compelling, mindful performances of our lead actors, the journey is worth the trail.
While Renee Zellwegger got the most attention and accolades for her performance, Nicole Kidman is also quite commendable in her role. As a woman hoping to keep things together during the troubles of the Civil War, she displays her talents for showcasing strength and vulnerability in equal measures. It's a strong performance, and one that doesn't often get as much consideration as it should in Nicole Kidman's strong-filled career.
Rabbit HoleEmotionally authentic yet dramatically challenging, Rabbit Hole continues to be one of Nicole Kidman's finest performances to date. Given the fantastic material from playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, who adapted his play of the same name, and compelled by the sensitive, yet impactful, direction of the great John Cameron Mitchell, Rabbit Hole is a tragedy, filled with sorrow and pathos at every scene. But it never falls into misery, thanks largely to the incredible performances from Aaron Eckhart, Dianne Wiest and a pre-fame Miles Teller. But Kidman, in particular, stands out.
As a mother who is grieving from the death of her young son, Nicole Kidman delivers a commanding, yet deeply vulnerable, performance, filled with emotional intensity and dramatic nuance. It's a tremendous showcase for her dramatic versatility, showcasing the wide range of troubled emotions that come to a person when something this tragic, traumatic and heartbreaking is unfortunately found in someone's lives. The result is a beautifully-realized, delicately somber tale filled with sadness and tenderness in each measures. Kidman was also rightfully nominated for an Oscar for this role.
The Killing Of A Sacred DeerBefore Yorgos Lanthimos won awards voters' affections with last year's wickedly entertaining The Favourite, the Greek filmmakers alienated more than a few viewers with his divisive dark psychological horror flick, The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The film, which follows a cardiac surgeon (Colin Farrell) who makes the sullen company of a strange teenager (Barry Keoghan) who begins to torment the medical expert's family before the surgeon's past sins, is definitely not one that can be enjoyed by a wide audience. It's a moody, bleak, ruthlessly oppressive film, and that is at its kindest moments. But if you're someone who likes their movies a little more bitter than most, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is one that's most certainly worth your while.
And one of the film's greatest strengths is Nicole Kidman. The actress plays Colin Farrell's romantic partner in the movie, and through her commanding, often chilling performance, she helps to capture the unsettling in the everyday mundanities of white collar suburban living. It is most certainly a supporting turn in the film, but Kidman's presence is still welcomed nonetheless, and she helps capture the darkened mood perfectly. Come to think of it, The Killing of a Sacred Deer would make a strange, yet sort of perfect double feature with the next film on this particular ranking.
Eyes Wide ShutStanley Kubrick's final picture, 1999's moody, mysterious Eyes Wide Shut, is a confounding conclusion to some, and a melodic, poetic final brush stroke for others. I can't speak for everyone, but I'm definitely in the latter category. Kubrick's swan song doesn't quite reach the same heights as a few of his other masterpieces, but this bizarre, yet alluring, cult film (in more ways than one) is, nonetheless, benefitted enormously by Nicole Kidman.
As carefully constructed as every movie from Stanley Kubrick's filmography, Eyes Wide Shut can often seem haphazard and indecisive as you watch it. But it's one that definitely sticks with you and one that matches the obsessive compulsion that is found in our bewitched main character, played by Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman's real-life husband at the time. Although the couple on-screen share a real, intimate relationship together, one that feels real for that very reason, they don't have quite the same radiant chemistry intentionally so that you would expect from your Hollywood A-listers. It is a credit to Kidman, though, that she often sells the humanity and the mystery that is so crucial to this story. And for what it's worth, there are only a few stars who have dropped the f-bomb as well as Kidman does here.
The HoursIn what might remain her most transformative performance to date, The Hours was the film that finally won Nicole Kidman her Oscar back in 2003, and it's not hard to see why. The actress disappears into the role, physically as well as emotionally, in her memorable, stunning portrayal of Virginia Woolf. And that's certainly not a role that an actress can play lightly, particularly with the emotional tribulations that her character goes through here.
Portraying the mental illness that is found in the literary figure, Nicole Kidman dives deep into the role, capturing the emotional highs-and-lows of this character through her acting prowess. The result is widely considered one of her strongest performances to date, and the role is well-accoladed for that particular reason. If you have a chance to check it out, you should do so.

Glass: Breaking Down All Of The Horde's Identities
Split was an unqualified hit and most of the credit for that goes to James McAvoy. In the role of Kevin Wendell Crumb, he played a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder who contained a total of 24 distinct personalities inside him. McAvoy then had to play each one as its own separate character, creating an entire cast from a single actor.
With Glass on the way, we know we're going to get to know many more of Kevin Wendell Crumb's personalities, but the ones we've already met are sure to make a major impact. Here's a quick rundown of everybody we've already met and the role they play in Kevin's life.
BarryBarry is a key personality inside Kevin, as he was originally the dominant personality (when we see a list of the personalities later in the movie, Barry is number one). His singular focus is the protection of Kevin, which frequently includes attempting to keep the other personalities in line so that they don't end up hurting him. Barry probably qualifies as the most "normal" of Kevin's personalities. He has a passion for fashion design, frequently showing his creations to psychiatrist Dr. Fletcher. Eventually Barry loses his dominant position to two other personalities, Dennis and Patricia.
With Kevin clearly in danger in Glass, Barry could be key to whatever resolution the film provides. If Barry is able to reestablish dominance, he could change the complexion of any situation involving Kevin very quickly.
DennisDennis is one of Kevin's most dangerous personalities. He tends toward violence and his sexual tendencies put the kidnapped girls of Split in constant danger. Dennis is the personality guilty of grabbing the girls in the first place. He also attempts to impersonate Barry with the psychiatrist in order to divert any suspicion of what he and the others are up to.
Dennis suffers from some degree of obsessive-compulsive disorder and is obsessed with cleanliness. While he may be a dangerous personality to other people, he also acts as a caretaker for the other personalities, so he's not entirely heartless.
PatriciaPatricia is sophisticated, proper and orderly. She's one of the few, but not only, female personalities inside Kevin, and she, along with Dennis, takes a lead role in controlling the group throughout most of Split. For all intents and purposes, she's the mother of the group. She comes across mostly as polite, offering you a sandwich if you'd like one. But if you disobey her, she can be as vicious any other voice in Kevin's head.
This was without question one of the better performances that James McAvoy created in Split. Patricia is a cold and calculating sort of evil, and she wants nothing more than to bring forth The Beast. Since she was ultimately successful, it will be more than a little interesting to see what she does next.
HedwigHedwig is one of the personalities that gets a lot of time "in the light." He's nine years old and most of the rest of the personalities inside Kevin tend to act like his parents. They tell him what to do and he does his best to carry out their orders, though, being nine, he often fails to get things just right. He's the only personality that tries to befriend any of the captive girls in Split, largely because he has a crush on them.
We see a lot of Hedwig in Split, so it's a safe bet that will continue in Glass. Although, it will be interesting to see how a child reacts to being locked away in an asylum.
JadeJade is one personality that we only see a couple of brief times in Split. She appears briefly in a video file that Casey finds on Kevin's computer. There we learn that she is diabetic, a medical oddity since none of Kevin's other personalities are. She appears to be a teen or a young adult, though her exact age isn't clear.
She pops up again briefly after Kevin begins to retreat from reality. She clearly wants to protect him, though her exact allegiances in regards to The Beast are not clear.
OrwellOrwell is another personality that we only get brief glimpses of. Like Jade he shows up in a video file and then briefly speaks to Casey after Kevin begins to lose control. He's well educated, particularly about world history.
The only other thing that we know about him is that he is one of the personalities that is against The Beast coming out, which could potentially make him an ally to David Dunn in Glass.
The BeastThroughout the entirety of Split, there is some question as to whether Kevin's 24th personality actually exists or not. Those that believe in The Beast spend the film waiting for him to emerge, seemingly without any real evidence that he will. However, in the end, The Beast does arrive.
Kevin's body physically transforms to become more muscular and The Beast is capable of seemingly superhuman feats, including being able to scale sheer walls. The Beast is violence personified and his freedom at the end of Split means that terrible things are likely to happen.
Kevin Wendell CrumbKevin is technically the base personality of the character played by James McAvoy. Abused by his mother, Kevin retreated from reality and created these many other personalities to help protect him from her. By saying his name, Casey is able to bring Kevin into the light, though it's clear that's a place he has no wish to be.
It seems likely we'll see Kevin again in Glass, if anybody is able to get him to emerge once again.
From Kevin's computer files, we do know the names of every other personality inside Kevin Wendell Crumb. They are: Heinrich, Mary Reynolds, Norma, Goddard, Bernice, Polly, Luke, Rakel, Felicia, Ansel, Jelin, Kat, B.T, Samuel, Ian and Mr. Pritchard. However, we do not actually meet any of them during Split. Since James McAvoy apparently plays 20 different characters in Glass, it does seem we'll meet several of the other personalities very soon.
We'll meet these other personalities and reunite with a few when Glass opens in theaters tomorrow, January 18.

Just moments ago, it was announced that The Batman, one of the most eagerly anticipated projects in the DC Extended Universe, is coming out on June 25, 2021. Along with this news, it was also reported that this movie will see a different actor playing Batman rather than Ben Affleck. Now the actor has confirmed that this information is indeed true with the following tweet:
If this doesnt constitute enough confirmation in your mind, THR has confirmed with Ben Affleck that this tweet is him saying goodbye to the role. This marks the end of an era, with Afflecks tenure as Batman finishing with three movies. He made his DCEU debut in 2016s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, followed that up with a minor appearance in Suicide Squad months later and then donned the cape and cowl one last time for Justice League in late 2017.
Although a DCEU-set Batman movie was first announced in October 2014, the project took a major step forward in 2016, when it was revealed that in addition to starring in The Batman, Ben Affleck would direct and produce the movie, and also co-write the screenplay with Geoff Johns. The story those two came up with would have seen the Caped Crusader battling Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, who was introduced at the end of Justice League and played by Joe Manganiello.
However, at the start of 2017, Ben Affleck dropped out of directing The Batman, and a few months later, War for the Planet of the Apes Matt Reeves was tapped for helming duties and to rewrite the story from scratch. Since then, theres been no shortage of rumors and reports that claimed that a different actor would take over as Batman for this upcoming movie, and nearly two years later, this will he, wont he back-and-forth is finally over.
The search is now underway to find someone to succeed Ben Affleck as the live action Batman. Although Warner Bros and DC are reportedly looking for someone younger to step into the role, its also been said that The Batman will not be an adaptation of the Year One storyline. Story-wise, all Matt Reeves has revealed so far is that The Batman will have a noir tone, see Bruce Wayne using his detective skills and feature multiple Batman villains. Its rumored that Penguin will be one of these adversaries.
As for Ben Affleck, he has enough projects to keep himself busy for the foreseeable future. His future cinematic appearances include I Am Still Alive, based off the same-named book by Kate Alice Marshall; Torrance, which follows a former basketball player who becomes a coach at a high school while dealing with his addiction; and The Accountant 2. Hes also directing a movie about the rigged McDonalds Monopoly game that will star his Good Will Hunting buddy, Matt Damon.
