Ryan Coogler's Black Panther has finally debuted, and one of its biggest charms is how insulated it is from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That said, the film still exists as part of this world, and that is arguably most apparent in the end credits scene when Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is finally thawed out and has a brief exchange with Shuri (Letitia Wright). The sequence is a showstopper for fans wondering when he would come back ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, and according to Ryan Coogler, it was something that the Black Panther team came up with for the movie. Coogler explained:

We weren't asked to do it. Obviously, it ties in, but the studio didn't force our hand, or tell us what the post-credits scene should be. It was something that we were interested in, that we were interested in doing. And for us it was fun, because I think the audience, if they're familiar with the MCU, knows that Bucky is in Wakanda.

Pretty much everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is connected, which means Bucky was a puzzle piece that Ryan Coogler and the team behind Black Panther had at their disposal. Realizing that fans would want to see him show up at some point (they would never just be content with the Infinity War prequel comic showing how he broke free from his brainwashing), they opted to insert him into the credits as a "fun" cameo. It wasn't a mandate from Marvel Studios as much as it was just something that they wanted to do.

Think about it, would you really want Captain America: Civil War to be our last glimpse of The Winter Soldier? We didn't think so.

Of course, given the fact that we already know that Bucky Barnes hid in Wakanda during the events of Black Panther, this raises the question of why we didn't see him during the actual film. To answer that query, Ryan Coogler explained later in his interview with Radio Times that Black Panther simply wasn't Bucky's story, so they held off on showing him until the film had wrapped. Coogler explained:

It was kind of a hold-off. Our film wasn't about Bucky, obviously, [so] we didn't feel like it would be right to deal with him in this context. But we thought it'd be cool for the fans that stayed 'til the end to check in on this character that they love.

Captain Marvel Box Office: The Blockbuster Keeps Going Higher, Further, Faster

Following its massive opening weekend, there was little doubt that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel would be able to take the top spot again at the box office, and the film very much lived up to expectations in its second Friday to Sunday. The numbers aren't quite out of this world, as the movie dropped a fairly standard 54 percent, but the amount of money that the blockbuster is pulling in is still quite impressive. Captain Marvel had the seventh best debut in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (not factoring in inflation), and it's quickly making its way up the ranks overall. Thanks to the money that it made this weekend, it not only crossed the $200 million line domestically, but also flew past the run totals for Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man And The Wasp, Doctor Strange, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It's hard to estimate exactly where it will wind up in the rankings over all once its done with its theatrical run, but there's a chance it could wind up in the franchise's Top Five if everything goes according to plan.

The success is very much continuing overseas as well, where the film is actually now the eleventh most successful Marvel international release with a total of $762.1 million. Part of this is because the film has already landed in China, where it has already brought in over $104 million in the last five days. And in case you were wondering, yes, these numbers now make it so that Captain Marvel is the most successful release of 2019 so far, with its totals now surpassing the Chinese blockbuster The Wandering Earth, which dropped into theaters in its home country back in early February.

None of this is surprising at all, of course, as there is no questioning the power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brand. These films have basically been deemed must-sees by the movie-going public ever since the release of The Avengers back in 2012, and nothing is slowing the film down. In fact, there's a good chance that the only title being released in the next couple of months that will be able to surpass the totals of the Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck film will be Avengers: Endgame, which is expected to be a record-breaker when it lands in theaters worldwide at the end of April.

What was good news for Captain Marvel, however, was most definitely not good news for the other new releases that arrived in theaters this weekend - with the exception of Nacho Garcia Velilla's No Manches Frida 2. The Spanish-language comedy (which is a sequel to 2016's No Manches Frida) was released on less than 500 screens nationwide, and not only was it able to make it on to the Top 10, but it landed sixth place. Of course, a haul of $3.9 million isn't exactly extraordinary, but it's definitely significant when you factor in that the movie had the second best per screen average of any other title featured on the chart.

Of the wide releases, Wonder Park (which doesn't have a credited director) actually managed to surpass expectations, as prognosticators suggested that it was only going to make about $10 million in its first three days. Still, things don't look great for the animated film, which apparently on its way to losing a significant amount of money. Having been in development for a number of years, the project had a pre-marketing budget between $80 million and $100 million, and it doesn't appear that the movie's domestic numbers are going to be big enough to make that seem like a worthy investment.

Things didn't exactly go spectacularly for Justin Baldoni's romantic drama Five Feet Apart either, which ranked third with its $13.2 million take. The film got a mixed response from critics, and positive marks from audiences (it has an "A" on CinemaScore), but the numbers don't exactly compare to the similarly themed The Fault In Our Stars from a few years ago, which had a $48 million opening, and went on to make $307.2 million worldwide. Obviously this film is not going to go that distance.

The third and final wide release for the weekend was Rupert Wyatt's Captive State, which also failed to get any kind of legitimate attention - despite featuring a fantastic ensemble cast including John Goodman, Vera Farmiga, Ashton Sanders, Alan Ruck, James Ransone, and more. Unfortunately, it seems that audiences were really only interested in seeing one alien invasion movie this week, and while fans flocked to Captain Marvel, Captive State was left forced to settle for seventh place.

Lastly I'll shine a quick spotlight on Mike Mitchell's The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part - which completed its sixth week of release on Sunday with an eighth place finish. With the additional $2.1 million added to its domestic total, the movie has now become the fifth 2019 title to make more than $100 million here at home (the others being The Upside, Glass, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and Captain Marvel). The film definitely isn't doing as well as its predecessor, which made over $250 million by the time it was done with theaters in 2014, but a milestone is still a milestone.

Coming up we have a very interesting showdown, as there's only one new release coming out on Friday, but it's a big one. Expectations are through the roof for Jordan Peele's Get Out follow-up, Us, and the new title could wind up surpassing the Oscar-winning feature's first three day total ($33.4 million). But will it be enough to dethrone Captain Marvel? It should ultimately make for one of the most exciting head-to-head matchups we've seen so far this year, and it will be exciting to see which movie walks away the big winner. Could A Leak Have Revealed Episode IX's Title?

It's a great time to be a Star Wars fan, as there's a ton of exciting content coming down the pipeline. With Disney now in charge of Lucasfilm, plenty of new projects have arrived over the past few years, including both standalone films and main installments. It all started with J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens, which reignited the narrative and brought new heroes together with franchise favorites like Leia and Han.

The current trilogy is wrapping up with Episode IX, with J.J. Abrams returning to the director's chair after Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow departed the project due to creative differences with the studio. The film's contents are a complete mystery, as nothing besides the cast has been announced. This includes the movie's title, which still hasn't been revealed. At least, until now.

There have been plenty of fan theories floating around regarding Episode IX's mysterious title. But a new possible title has now hit Reddit, with the poster claiming that it's the real thing. That title? Star Wars: Son Of Darkness. Did anyone else just get chills?

This possible title comes to us from redditor TheGarrettThomas, who claims to have been told the title of Episode IX before the general public. While they don't cite who the original source was, the title is ominous enough to get serious attention from the Star Wars fandom. Son of Darkness is a title that can be applied to a variety of characters throughout the Star Wars franchise, making it an appropriate title to end the Skywalker Saga forever.

Of course, Star Wars: Son Of Darkness hasn't been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm, and it's more than possible that this is just another rumor that won't come to fruition. But with so little information currently known about Episode IX, the generations of Star Wars fans are eager for any and all information about J.J. Abrams' upcoming blockbuster. Including a title as bold as Son of Darkness.

Giving Episode IX the name Son of Darkness would be a bit of a departure from how Star Wars franchises usually function. The space opera's titles typically describe a major event in the franchise's canon. The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith both describe the dark forces of the franchise rising up after an embarrassing defeat. Meanwhile, A New Hope and The Force Awakens tease a resistance against the all powerful forces controlling The Empire-- The Empire and The First Order.

In contrast, Star Wars: Son Of Darkness would seemingly describe one specific character-- most likely Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. Kylo's morality has been at the center of the current trilogy, so naming Episode IX after him would make a great deal of sense. That potential title bears a closer resemblance to Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi.

Before its release, there was a ton of theorizing about who might be the titular Last Jedi. Rey and Luke were both tossed around as possibilities, although the meaning of the title became clear when the film hit theaters. There was no Last Jedi, as Rey helped to inspire a new generation of Light Side heroes.

The title of Episode IX is just one of the many mysterious surrounding the upcoming Star Wars sequel. The pressure is on for J.J. Abrams to deliver a satisfying conclusion to not only the current trilogy, but the Skywalker Saga in general. The Star Wars franchise is one that has been passed down across the generations, so there's a massive group of fans looking to see how the the galaxy far, far away ends up.

While Son of Darkness seems like it is referencing the villainous Kylo Ren, its a title that could reference quite a few characters in the Star Wars franchise. The most literal interpretation of the title would be about be about Luke Skywalker, who is a son of the galaxy's most evil. Darth Vader is the big villain and mascot of the property, and Empire Strikes Back's twist revealed that he was the son of the Sith Lord.

There's also an argument to be made that Darth Vader himself was the son of darkness, considering his fate as one of the galaxy's most evil villains. Anakin Skywalker was born via immaculate conception, with Shmi lacking a partner and reason for becoming pregnant with the young villain. While he was prophesied to bring balance to The Force, he ultimately took the Jedi Order down, and murdered even the youngest of force sensitive figures in the galaxy.

Of course, it's more than possible that Episode IX won't actually be named Son of Darkness. We're still a year away from the blockbuster's release, so there's a long time to wait until Disney and Lucasfilm begin announcing updates about the upcoming Star Wars sequel. Rumors and fan theories for popular blockbusters are very common, so it's probably best we don't put too much stock in the potential title until it's officially announced.

Narratively, it seems like Episode IX could take the Star Wars franchise seemingly anywhere. While The Force Awakens was a traditional Star Wars flick similar to A New Hope, The Last Jedi took the property to brand new places. Director Rian Johnson crafted a blockbuster that was purposefully subversive, and went against everything fans were expecting with Episode VIII. As such, fans have no clue as to where the story will go next.

Luckily, J.J. Abrams returning to the director's chair allows him to complete the story he began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While Rian Johnson took the character Abrams created to new places with The Last Jedi, Episode IX will give him the reigns once again. As such, he can complete Rey, Poe, and Finn's stories in the way he originally planned. Whether or not this includes Abrams retconning certain plot twists like Rey's parentage remains to be seen.

It's currently unclear when the Star Wars franchise will finally reveal the title for Episode IX. Disney has been very selective about its titles recently, especially when it comes to major blockbusters like the Star Wars or Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if Star Wars: Son of Darkness ends up being the real title, perhaps Lucasfilm will make the reveal sooner rather than later.

David Gordon Green's reboot-quel opened in theaters last night and absence has clearly made the heart grow fonder, as Halloween made $7.7 million in preview screenings.

Thursday night previews began at 7 p.m. at 3,200 locations, netting the Miramax/Blumhouse and Universal Pictures film a cool $7.7 million to get a head start on what should be a massive weekend for the horror flick. This amount falls short of the estimates that had it pegged at $10 million, but is still a great number that bests The Nun's $5.4 million preview opening.

This performance also lands Halloween as arguably the third-best horror preview showing ever, after IT's $13.5 million and Paranormal Activity 3's $8 million. Tracking before the opening had Halloween headed for a record $70 million opening weekend, which would be the second best for a horror film of all-time, and that is still possible given the Thursday night numbers.

As noted by Deadline in its box office report, horror movies are typically front-loaded with audiences falling off as the weekend progresses, so it's somewhat difficult to judge exactly what Thursday night's performance means for the overall weekend. Halloween could perform more like a blockbuster and bring in audiences throughout the entire weekend, thus delivering a bigger return.

If Halloween's box office performance from day-to-day over opening weekend is in line with movies like IT or The Nun, it could be looking at around a $75 million debut. It'll be an easy win for Michael Myers this weekend, it's just a question of how many wallets he will be slashing open.

We know that Halloween is the top horror pre-seller this year, and Deadline also reported that the advance ticket sales are huge. This is even after the preview screenings, with pre-sales at some multiplexes surpassing those of IT, which should raise some eyebrows as that film is currently the horror GOAT at the box office.

Halloween is bolstered by the brand name, positive reviews, the Halloween season, the horror boom and nostalgia for the franchise. Though one thing working against Halloween box office-wise is that unlike IT or The Nun, Halloween is not playing on IMAX screens, which are currently displaying First Man. So Halloween is not benefitting from those premium ticket prices.
