All The Major Characters You Need To Know In Black Panther

You may not have heard this already, but some movie called Black Panther is set to come out later this week. It's about a man who dresses like a cat and protects his country as a king and superhero, and it's one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Black Panther is the fastest selling superhero movie on Fandango, and it's projected to be one of Marvel Studios' strongest openings ever. Yes, people are very excited to see this already critically acclaimed movie, which only really stars one recognizable character (Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa) amongst a host of new faces.

It's not often these days that a Marvel movie comes around and people don't already the majority of the cast, but that's part of the fun of a brand new Marvel movie! Because the chances are pretty high that most people won't know who Nakia or Killmonger is, I've compiled a list of the major characters that will be appearing in the movie, complete with a little introduction of who they are and what they're all about.

T'ChallaRelation to Black Panther: He is Black PantherPowers: Heightened Strength and Agility; Fighting Prowess; Vibranium Costume and WeaponsHe should need no introduction. T'Challa is the main character of the movie, and made his debut in Captain America: Civil War. He returns to his nation of Wakanda as king and must balance his new responsibilities with his duties as Black Panther. Not everyone is happy T'Challa has assumed the throne, and he'll have to deal with enemies both outside and within Wakanda to protect it. Those who love the character won't have to wait much longer to see him again. Black Panther has a role to play in Avengers: Infinity War, with Wakanda is a major set piece.

Erik KillmongerRelation to Black Panther: Hates Him and Wants the Wakanda ThronePowers: Extremely Skilled and Capable Fighter; Might Have Augmented Strength and Agility Like Black PantherErik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) is the main antagonist of the movie and he seeks to usurp the throne in order take control of Wakanda for what he sees as the "greater good," which likely doesn't mean anything good for the rest of the world. Early reactions to the film praise Killmonger as one of the best villains Marvel has ever done. His exact goals in the movie are still unknown but he does get his own vibranium Black Panther suit so he can go toe-to-toe with T'Challa. In the comics, he was an exiled Wakandan who returns to exact his revenge on Black Panther.

NakiaRelation to Black Panther: Confidant and Former FlamePowers: Skilled in Espionage and FightingNakia (Lupita Nyong'o) is a War Dog in the movie. It's her job to spy on the rest of the world and report events back to Wakanda. Occasionally this means getting her hands dirty and kicking some ass. She's an extremely capable fighter and she tries to buck from the traditions of Wakanda. Nakia is a confidant to T'Challa and the two of them have some kind of romantic past. She typically fights with two metal rings, but expect an upgrade somewhere down the line.

OkoyeRelation to Black Panther: Leader of the Dora MilajePowers: Highly Trained Warrior; Master of Several Different Weapons; Tactical MindDanai Gurira brings her considerable action skills from The Walking Dead over to Black Panther. She plays Okoye, leader of the Dora Milaje, Wakanda's deadliest warriors and sworn protectors of the throne. Okoye is rooted in the traditions of Wakanda, which puts her at odds with the more free-wheeling Nakia. Okoye is loyal to T'Challa, and we can expect her to be all kinds of bad ass. She will live to fight another foe -- or more specifically, aliens -- in Avengers: Infinity War.

ShuriRelation to Black Panther: Younger SisterPowers: Smartest Person in the WorldT'Challa may be the one who gets to wear the suit, but all of his toys (and many of the technological developments in Wakanda) come from his 16-year-old sister, Shuri. Played by Letitia Wright, Shuri is the smartest person in the world -- even smarter than Tony Stark. She builds all of Black Panther's weapons and suits and even rocks a pair of her own sweet looking panther gauntlets. In the comics, Shuri eventually becomes the queen of Wakanda and takes on the mantle of Black Panther for a time, gaining all of the powers of her older brother.

Everett Ross*Relation to Black Panther: *Government RepresentativePowers: Being a Really Good CIA AgentEverett Ross (Martin Freeman) was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War, where he tried to stick it to all the superheroes who didn't sign the Sokovia Accords. This time, he journeys to Wakanda as an ambassador of sorts and provides an outsiders perspective to the rich and developed wonders of the secretive Wakanda society. In the comics, Ross is comic relief, but the movie will depict him as a more capable agent who can hold his own -- both physically and diplomatically.

Ulysses KlaueRelation to Black Panther: EnemyPowers: Mechanical Arm That Turns into a Laser Weapon; Afraid of CuttlefishAfter first making his debut several years ago in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ulysses Klaue finally returns to the MCU. Klaue is one of the rare people to ever penetrate the borders of Wakanda and live to tell about it. He's a weapons dealer who made off with a modest amount of vibranium, all of which was taken from him by Ultron (though, he did get paid). It seems Klaue is eager to get back into Wakanda, and he's made an alliance with Erik Killmonger. He's got a new robot arm that morphs into a weapon. In the comics, Klaue is Black Panther's arch-nemesis and gets turned into living sound.

M'BakuRelation to Black Panther: EnemyPowers: Leader and Skilled FighterM'Baku is the leader of a tribe in Wakanda that is none too happy that T'Challa is now on the throne. M'Baku's tribe is against all the technology in Wakanda and believes that the only way forward is to look toward the past. With Killmonger and Klau running around, M'Baku is a dangerous third player that could tip the scales. In the comics, he's better known as Man-Ape, but the producers correctly decided to avoid the racial pitfalls of a black man dressed as an evil gorilla.

ZuriRelation to Black Panther: AdvisorPowers: NoneAdding some extra pedigree to the cast is Forest Whitaker, who plays Zuri, the chief advisor to the king. He was a longtime advisor to T'Chaka, and now Zuri guides T'Challa in his new duties as king. Zuri is the keeper of the Heart Shaped Herb, the plant that gives Black Panther his powers. Zuri is a connection to the more spiritual and religious side of Wakanda and serves as a link to T'Challa's past.

W'KabiRelation to Black Panther: Advisor and Best FriendPowers: Skilled WarriorW'Kabi is played by Daniel Kaluuya, who broke out in one of last year's most successful movies, Get Out. W'Kabi is T'Challa's best friend and a member of the Border Tribe, one of the most important groups in Wakanda. They protect the Wakanda borders from invaders and keep up the charade that Wakanda is just a poor African nation. They are some of the deadliest fighters in Wakanda's army. When T'Challa becomes king, he asks W'Kabi to join him in the palace as an advisor.

RamondaRelation to Black Panther: MotherPowers: Being Angela BassettAngela Bassett joins the MCU has Ramonda, the former queen of Wakanda and now the mother of the king. T'Challa looks to her for insight on what his father would do in his situation. While Ramonda serves in an advisory position, we know that trailers that she gets involved in some of the action herself. We also know that she can totally rock some white-colored dreads.

Why Julia Roberts Probably Wont Star In Romantic Comedies Anymore

If you look at Julia Roberts' resume, you'll see the actress has starred in some of the most well-known romantic comedies of the last couple decades, Pretty Woman, My Best Friend's Wedding and Notting Hill. But moving forward, it's unlikely you'll see Roberts star in such movies, as she believes she's reached an age where she can't convincingly play a rom-com lead. In Roberts' words:

There came a point in my career where people thought I had turned on romantic comedies, which I love them, I love to be in them, I love to watch them. But sometimes, they just don't work at a certain point of life experience.

Julia Roberts clarified that she could still show up down the line in a romantic comedy as the parent of someone who is "rom-com-ing," but she thinks her days as one of the main subjects in such a story are behind her. As Roberts sees it, once the audience doesn't believe that the actors in a rom-com aren't "naive and emotionally juvenile," thus allowing for various shenanigans to unfold, that presents a problem. Roberts continued:

It's not about age, it's just about what people know that you know.

While romantic comedies usually center on younger people, every now and then one of these stories center on middle-aged or older characters, and Julia Roberts recognizes this. Nevertheless, she believes that because of her collective experiences, she just wouldn't be able to play a rom-com lead as effectively as she did earlier in her career. It's maturation at work, as she noted while speaking with ET.

Julia Roberts' last romantic comedy appearance was in 2016's Mother's Day, although in that movie, her storyline revolved around her character reconnecting with her daughter rather than falling in love. Perhaps Roberts will change her mind about rom-coms if the right opportunity reaches her, but for now, she sounds comfortable with leaving this particular genre behind.

Needless to say that just because Julia Roberts doesn't plan on starring in romantic comedies doesn't mean her acting career is winding down. Last year, she appeared alongside Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay in Wonder and lent her vocal talents to Smurfs: The Lost Village. Her next big screen appearance will be in December's Ben Is Back, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

But if you're really eager for a new Julia Roberts project, she can next be seen in the TV realm playing caseworker Heidi Bergman in Amazon's psychological thriller series Homecoming, which premieres on November 2 and sees the actress reuniting with her My Best Friend's Wedding's costar, Dermot Mulroney. The Cloverfield Monster Explained

In 2008, Cloverfield introduced us to a monster that most would originally be known as The Cloverfield Monster, and would later receive the name of Clover. With a reappearance in 2018s The Cloverfield Paradox, and a tangential connection to 2016s 10 Cloverfield Lane, Clovers legacy would grow into a cinematic universe bound by creatures not of this earth.

With the appearance of such beasts came a lot of questions, specifically pertaining to that of Cloverfields Clover, as the monster was pretty well hidden in the pre-release marketing for director Matt Reeves and producer J.J. Abrams found footage epic. Seeing as were well past that point though, its time for some answers.

The burning questions surrounding Case Designate Cloverfields star subject are about to be answered, so prepare to learn everything youd want to know about Clover, the Cloverfield Monster.

What Is The Cloverfield Monster?Clover, the Cloverfield monster, does not have an official species designation. As such, we have no true name for the species that it belongs to. However, there is an official government designation that covers it to a certain extent. The Cloverfield Monster is known as a Large Scale Aggressor, or LSA for short.

Speculated to be a creature of either underwater or interdimensional origin, Clover is an infant specimen of its species, separated from its family. Overridden by a sense of panic, the creature engages in destroying New York City landmarks as it makes a path through the city and squares off with military forces trying to kill it. Its huge, frightened, and strong.

What Are Its Powers/Abilities?Clover the Cloverfield Monster does not have any particular powers or special abilities, as the creature is a newborn and we havent really seen this species in action for an extended enough period of time to discern any special powers. Most likely though, the Cloverfield beast in question does not have any powers/abilities that would allow it to achieve any spectacular feats.

What the Cloverfield Monster did show us, as seen during the events of Cloverfield, is that its a pretty tough beast. Taking on small arms fire, numerous rounds from an armored tank, and even a sustained drop of several bombs, Clover was able to continue conducting a parade of destruction throughout New York City. This forced the military forces on site to resort to the Hammer Down protocol, which saw several bombs being rained down on Clover, in an attempt to kill it. According to the notes from the Special Investigation Mode of the Blu-ray release for Cloverfield, Clover is dead.

Can You Destroy The Cloverfield Monster?It is unknown what methods were used in the Hammer Down protocol, so we dont know exactly how you can destroy or even weaken the monster from Cloverfield. As we never saw the aftermath of that action, we dont know exactly what it takes to kill a Large Scale Aggressor. So the question isnt if you can destroy the creature from Cloverfield; but rather how much force is enough?

With the Hammer Down protocol theorized to have the ability to wipe out the island of Manhattan, and the ordinance required to take Clover down being listed as significantly heavier than the Mark-82 bombs previously used, it sounds like quite a bit of force is required to take down this species of creature. This is especially troublesome when considering Clover is, again, a newborn.

Where Did The Cloverfield Monster Come From?Originally, it was presumed that Clover was woken up from the depths of the sea, as hinted at in the Cloverfield ARG campaign. At the end of the 2008 film, what looks like an object falling into the ocean from the sky was credited as awakening this young creature. Later reports would indicate that it was a satellite owned by the in-universe Tagruato Corporation, named ChimpanzIII, that did the job. Though the original story also included some elements such as deep sea drilling that supposedly agitated this creature, its presumed family, and its ecosystem, more information suggests that the Cloverfield monster really isnt of this world.

As shown in The Cloverfield Paradoxs 2028 timeframe, its to be presumed that the unnamed species of Cloverfield Monsters was actually unleashed as a part of the Cloverfield Station incident, which tore a hole in the fabric between dimensions and saw both worlds' versions of that same station mixed together. There is also a distinct possibility that these creatures may have been created from this incident.

Where Else Has The Cloverfield Monster Been Seen?During the finale of The Cloverfield Paradox, its revealed that in the aftermath of the trans-dimensional event that originated from Cloverfield Stations power experiment had unleashed not just one, but several Cloverfield Monsters onto the Earth that is the setting for that particular film. We see one other example of Clovers species of origin, and its unsettling for one big reason: it looks to be a full grown adult.

This specimen was so huge that it was able to poke its head above what looks like the lowest level of cloud cover on Earth, which roughly hovers around 6,500 feet. Clovers height, estimated to be around 250 feet or higher, which is mostly due to the baby version of this monster walking on all fours for the most part. This suggests, as creature designer Neville Page has theorized, that these creatures are much taller, due to being able to walk upright on two legs.

Are There Other Monsters In The Cloverfield Universe?In addition to Clover, and its species of Cloverfield monsters, there are other monsters to be spotted within the universe. In addition to Clover being designated as a Large Scale Aggressor, there are also Human Scale Parasites, or HSPs for short. You would know them better as the creepy, crab-like creatures that attack the team of survivors Cloverfield follows, and they appear to engage in a symbiotic relationship with the Cloverfield monster species. The bite of the HSP is deadly, as Lizzie Caplans Marlena was seen to have fall ill and explode in the aftermath of an attack by these creatures.

Meanwhile, in 10 Cloverfield Lane, a throwaway line about John Goodmans Howard Stambler having a theory on mutant space worms turned out to hit a little too close to home. As we saw in The Cloverfield Paradox, Cloverfield Station was experimenting with the effects of their space station on a worm colony, only to have those worms disappear. Some were found inside of a crew member on the station, in a post-mortem dissection; while others may have mutated into the huge creatures we saw Mary Elizabeth Winsteads Michelle face off against in the finale. Though theres a chance that much like Clover and the Cloverfield Monster species, these were creatures from another universe displaced into the one shown in 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Over a decade later, and three films deep, the Cloverfield universe is still giving fans new creatures to behold, and leaving more questions in their wake each time a new film drops. If the franchise continues, through future Netflix films or even the true sequel to Cloverfield that fans have been promised, heres hoping we get some more information on these beasts and what makes them tick. Lets not forget that knowing is half the battle, and with what we know, wed say were about a quarter of the way towards being ready to fight.
