Natalie Portman Responds To Annihilation's White-Washing Controversy

After turning the world of TV production on its head, Netflix has set its sights on the world of film. The streaming services has acquired the distribution rights to a variety of movies in the past year or so, the latest of which is Alex Garland's upcoming sci-fi film Annihilation. Starring Natalie Portman, Annihilation is loosely based off the novel of the same name. But the second novel in the trilogy reveals more about the characters, including that Portman's character Lena is an Asian woman. As such, Annihilation has been met with some backlash, and accused of white washing. Natalie Portman herself recently responded to the controversy, although she admits that she didn't have prior knowledge of Lena being Asian prior to the question.

Well, that does sound problematic. But I'm hearing it here first. We need more representation of Asians on film, of Hispanics on film, of Blacks on film. Women in particular, women of color, Native Americans. I mean, we just don't have enough representation.

While Natalie Portman's name may brought into the conversation regarding Annihilation, the Oscar winner certainly seems cognizant of the conversation revolving around representation and inclusion in film. And rather than skirting around the issue, Portman is prepared to make the discussion around her casting both constructive and respectful.

Annihilation director Alex Garland has responded to the controversy as well. It seems that the director, as well as the cast, weren't influenced by any of the novels other than the first. As such, they seed to be unaware that Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh's characters were eventually revealed to be Asian and Native American respectively.

In her same conversation with Yahoo, Natalie Portman further expanded upon the problem of race in Hollywood, and why the entertainment world needs to make a collective shift towards inclusion. Specifically, that there's not just white vs non-white roles. She said,

And also these categories are like 'white' and 'non-white', are totally imagined classifications, but have real life consequences. There's absolutely not enough representation of 'non-whites', even though that's a false category. Particularly women of color on film. And I hope that gets to change, because everyone is becoming more conscious of it--- which hopefully will make change.

While Natalie Portman was certainly caught off guard by learning of the controversy surrounding her casting, she addressed the issue, and spoke out about the cultural shift that she feels Hollywood needs to make in the future. We'll just have to see if Annihilation gets lumped into movies accused of white washing like Ghost in the Shell and Doctor Strange.

Now with $1 billion in the bank worldwide, you knew that there was no way Saturday Night Live wasn't going to do a Black Panther themed sketch last night. The blockbuster is the talk of the town and the chances were only increased with Sterling K. Brown as host. Brown has a role in Black Panther, the specifics of which I won't spoil here, but rest assured that Brown is predictably very good. The This Is Us star suited up as a different character in a "deleted scene" from Black Panther, in which T'Challa meets some...unique family members in the spirit realm.

In Saturday Night Live's Black Panther sketch, T'Challa (Chris Redd) journeys to Djalia, the purple-skied spirit realm that hosts the souls of all the previous Black Panthers. However, as T'Challa' great-great-grandfather (Sterling K. Brown) and great aunt (Leslie Jones) explain, the souls of all members of their family rest in the spirit realm -- even the ones who married into it. Enter Uncle M'Butu (Kenan Thompson), grilling up some lion cheeseburgers and warning of the dangers of swamp mouth. M'Butu married into the family, which is why he gets to live out eternity in the spirit realm. He was married to a member of the Dora Milaje but ended up in Djalia after asking her if she could grow some hair because he was "sick of making love to Michael Jordan."

It's a very funny concept that never really manages to take off, but it is always amusing to watch Kenan Thompson play a well-meaning but annoying A-hole. His Uncle M'Butu is just trying to score a little weed in heaven or even just some vibranium. He needs it! Everyone else gets to ride a war rhino but he's stuck on an ostrich. Plus, his spirit animal is a warthog while everyone else in a panther. They are all going to hunt him as soon as T'Challa leaves!

Also, kudos to Sterling K. Brown and co. for keeping it together as much as they did in the sketch. They came this close to breaking after Thompson started shouting the opening to "The Circle of Life" from Lion King to his lion burger ("it's the good stuff"), but they held themselves together. That's a good way of summing up Brown as a host. He's a great actor and it showed throughout the rest of the night as he brought an extra dimension to each sketch.

After seeing A Star is Born, it's hard to imagine anyone else playing Jackson Maine other than Bradley Cooper. In addition to the emotion he brought to the role, the four-time Oscar nominee sang his own songs and was also totally convincing as a rock star. Originally though, A Star is Born was going to star a real rocker instead of Bradley Cooper: the former lead singer of The White Stripes, Jack White.

When Bradley Cooper was initially looking at A Star is Born as his directorial debut, he was interested in having an actual musician play the part of the aging rocker and he met with him about the part. According to Variety's sources, that actual musician was Jack White. However, while Bradley Cooper was interested in him in the role, it seems that the studio was not and would not make the movie with Jack White.

It's not clear why the studio didn't want Jack White to lead the movie. Perhaps it felt that he didn't have enough acting credits to instill confidence he could lead the film or perhaps he just wasn't a recognizable enough face. This all apparently occurred before Lady Gaga came aboard to star in the film, so maybe the studio wanted to make sure that at least one of the leads had a big name.

Singer-songwriter Jack White has been successful in bands and as a solo artist, so he obviously would have delivered in the musical parts of the film and A Star is Born would have played to his strengths, much as it did Lady Gaga's. The majority of Jack White's acting credits are roles where he played himself, although he did have a part in Cold Mountain and he delivered a memorable Elvis Presley in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

You can see the inclination to have a real rock star in the role. The songs are fraught with emotion and part of the story, so they have to be good and you want someone who can bring some authenticity on that front. It's hard to know how Jack White would have been as Jackson Maine, but thankfully the film we got doesn't have too many people wishing for what might have been.

While stellar musical performances are great, in the quiet moments you also need someone who can really act. Fortunately, Bradley Cooper actually sang live, including some songs he wrote, and came off as a believable rock star in the film. And Lady Gaga, who is a pop star, showed she is also a great actress. So it was a perfect marriage of two people who could deliver in all the areas the movie required.

Jack White as one of the leads is just one of the many permutations of what might have been with this A Star is Born remake over the years. At one point, Clint Eastwood was attached to direct and the film would have starred Beyonc instead of Lady Gaga. In the male lead, names like Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise and Christian Bale were all talked about.

A Star is Born has been a box office hit and it is set to make a serious run come awards season. Bradley Cooper's film may even get a new, extended cut.
