How George Clooney Got Back At Tina Fey And Amy Poehler For Their Golden Globes Joke
Way back in 2014, on-screen comedic duo and friends Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted Hollywood's most fun awards show, The Golden Globes. The two were as hilarious as you might expect, being well-suited to the relaxed nature of the ceremony and delivering comedy with a bit more bite than you might see at the Academy Awards. Probably their most savage joke of the night that year came at the expense of George Clooney. This was the year that Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, was up for a whole host of awards. It also provided perfect fodder for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to criticize the actor's love life, joking that George Clooney would rather float off into space than spend time with a woman his own age.
The joke was hilarious and George Clooney was able to laugh at himself at the ceremony, but the ribbing did not go unanswered. George Clooney is a notorious Hollywood prankster and made sure to go the extra mile to get Tina Fey and Amy Poehler back. Tina Fey described his funny retribution, saying:
He did like a whole revenge thing on us. He did all these George Clooney pranks on me and Amy. He sent me this letter that was supposedly from Matt Damon, that he was upset with us and the joke we had done. We lived in fear of it.
It is pretty funny to think of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler constantly wondering when George Clooney would strike, and whether or not they would know it when he does. Making Fey and Poehler think that their joke had bothered him so much that his friend Matt Damon would actually write to them about it is a solid prank, too. Speaking at a SiriusXM Town Hall (via People), Tina Fey elaborated that George Clooney really sold the lie by actually having stationary made with Matt Damon's name on it. So Tina Fey and Amy Poehler received some fancy faux-Matt Damon stationary saying how offended George Clooney was at the joke.
Given Clooney's reputation as a prankster, the fancy stationary didn't completely sell the lie, and Tina Fey said she couldn't know for sure whether the notices were real or not. Therefore, she sent two huge fruit baskets to Matt Damon just in case the letter was real. A fine gesture that backfired when Matt Damon told Tina Fey that his wife was now mad at her because of all the fruit in the house. When your prank snowballs and begets more unintended hilarity, that's when you know you're good. This just goes to show that while it's all in good fun, George Clooney is not a person to be trifled with.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will next be appearing in Amy Poehler's directorial debut film for Netflix, Wine Country. And although George Clooney is married and a proud father now and isn't doing much acting anymore, he will be directing, producing and starring in the Hulu miniseries adaptation Catch-22.
